Freesat tuning weirdness

Panasonic Viera TV with built in Freesat HD tuner

Hi, and sorry for the newbie question.

Just bought a Panasonic Viera with Freesat HD tuner built in. Part of the reason for this is that we live in a valley and Freeview doesn't work too well - can be OK, but often the picture breaks up. BT Vision box says the signal strength is only usually about 35%. Not sure if this is relevant to Freesat in any way.

Also, we live in a communal block with one dish.

So, the TV finds, tunes and broadcasts Freesat channels, including HD, perfectly all day. But in the evening it loses signal, sometimes completely. At other times it can find certain channels but usually not the main ones - BBC1/2 ITV1 etc. Definitely never HD.

Any ideas what this could be about? Can there simply be too many people using a signal from the same dish? Having said that, the people who used to live in the flat say they had no problem getting Sky.

There is only one cable attaching TV and dish, btw, but at the moment I'm not bothered about recording anything, just watching it live!

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's just possible that the TV is faulty but more likely it's the satellite signal at fault.

Unfortunately this means that you'll have to contact whoever is responsible for building upkeep/maintenance, or perhaps the residents' committee, and tell them that there's a problem with signal strength.

Just rereading your post, you say that the previous people had no problems with $ly. This means that that it COULD be the TV at fault after all. Does anyone else in the building have a problem? Could you borrow a Digibox to test the signal with?

Problem with a multi user system could be one or more faults. As PaulR says you will need to get in contact with who ever manages the system. I have helped with a few large multi user systems and from experience it shouldn´t take them long to isolate the fault or faults. Would be a good time to be around with some cash to bribe the service guy to run you a new second cable on the quiet.

thanks to you both. Everybody in my bit of the block appears to be using more or less dodgy Freeview. I'll speak to the maintenance feller.
