Hi guys..
While on holiday in the UK I noticed a lot of freeview boxes in the likes of Dixons and wollies...Question! do these boxes only work in the UK? I was very tempted to pick one up for 29 quid but wasn't sure if it would be compatable here in Ireland..anybody let me know if this is so.
cheers..

Not sure, just had a quick look and couldn't find anything about digital terrestrial in Ireland, or do you mean to pick up channels from the North?

What DTT are they doing South of the border? Would be interested to know and perhaps start a thread in the relevant section, same goes for other countries as well.

Hi rolfw..

DTT?..not sure mate, doesn't appear to be any service currently available..satellite and cable alright..It looks as if it was being introduced a while back but was put on hold...could be wrong though (wouldn't be the first time) does this mean the box wouldn't work...I know BBC and possibly ITV can be picked up very weakly through an aerial but I'm not sure if this would do the box..
cheers

If you can pick up only a weak signal from the North, then it is unlikely that the digital will be strong enough, who knows in a few years though, as the signals should get stronger when they switch off the analogue signal.

The EyeTV software that I run on all my Macs has an Ireland choice in the set up menu when doing a tuning scan. It has the Irish flag next to the name so it isnt meant for Northern pick up. However, this must be just a PR stunt since the last I heard, this summer, was the the Irish govt itself was about to do some pilot TXing, and not RTE. And there's nothing yet.

btw, EyeTV with Elgato or Terratec has put Mac users in real business here. I stopped using my Hauppauge DEC2000T as soon as I got one of each Elgato and Terratec. The recording features and subsequent editing and burning to DVD - all patched into latest Toast - are pretty good. If you dont need to do any editing, a DVD of a captured recording is ready in as long as it takes to burn.

Hello all.
I live in Ireland and am looking at digital Terrestrial for the 4 Irish TV channels. It would appear that in Ireland (that is South) the video compression is MPEG4 (H.264) where as in UK for example MPEG2. Uk boxes using only MPEG2 will NOT work here. You will have to have either a DTT Digital decoder box with MPEG4 (H.264) or a TV with MPEG4 (H.264) built in. Several boxes are available and connect to a new or existing UHF Aerial. Transmission is still in test mode but should go live and permanent in October 2010.

Hope this link is ok.
