Freeview PVR and Motorised dish connections

I have my motorised dish set up to give me several sats for different languages and have just obtained freeview on a Thomson DTI 6300 PVR. Can I connect them to record both freeview and my satellite programmes on the PVR? Will the electronic programme guide work with the satellite input?
 
No, unfortunately the Freeview PVRs will normally only record from the Freeview digital EPG and not external sources.
 
Thanks for the info, pity I didn't know before getting the Thomson! What PVR will record multiple satellite inputs? Seems pretty difficult to find something that doesn't come tied in with Sky etc.
 
Two options really, use a PVR that has external video inputs, or get a satellite receiver that has PVR capabilities.

Look for a satellite receiver that is 'PVR ready' to which you can add an external USB HDD, or get one with it built in.
 
Many thanks to both - reckon I'll see how I get along with the present setup - not too many programmes I want to record from the dish at present!

In due course I will probably look for a hard drive capable receiver but that can wait until I get a good enough southern view for my dish which presently has problems with trees.
 
Interesting I record from my satellite receiver on my freeview PVR which allows Tuner recording, Scart recording and F-composite recording as three separate options
 
Hi again Topper - what model does that? I'm looking for something that can do freeview to hard disc and also record from my satellite reciever via scart input.

The only units that will record from your satellite receiver are the latest HDD/DVD recorders. Both Panasonic and Sony do excellent units, but they are expensive.

No PVR will record from a scart input.

You are obviously not talking from experience BB and I am, as I have one as I have already stated previously, it is a Wharfdale DVDR24HD160F freeview DVD recorder with 160GB HD and HDMI Output and three options of recording input, it is not the latest unit by any means and is neither Panasonic nor Sony and I bought it for less than £100. In truth it is not 100% perfect and locks up when using the digital text pages but apart from that minor glitch, is extremely versatile and very well worth the money but it does exist I can assure you.

Many thanks. Does it allow 1-click selection of programmes for recording off the Freeview EPG guide? My Mrs can't get used to the DVD recorder and this might be the answer.....hopefully she won't reciprocate and buy me a user friendly washing machine......:)
 
Well I have to say I also have sagem freeview unit in the other room and I find that very easy, however on the Wharfdale you can easily record on the now and next menu by doing that which is ok, however, to record something in advance of now and next you have change to the 7 day EPG menu and change either the date and time to find your program, once you know how to do it, it works fine but is not ideal in my opinion, not what I would call slick

As I said in my post - to do ALL of what you want you need one of the latest HDD/DVD recorders from Panasonic, Sony or similar good brand.

They are excellent units, especially the Panasonic HDD/DVD, but you pay for the convenience.

With these units you have all the functions of a modern PVR - one click recording, series recording, recording from any state (unlike the old VCRs/DVDs you don't have to remember to put them into timer mode), play and record at same time, seven day EPG, etc.

I am responding to your incorrect statement, which is well incorrect
 
We are in agreement, just a problem with definitions.

I go with the flow and assume that a PVR does not have a DVD. Your individualistic definition is that a PVR can have an integrated DVD recorder.

As opposed to my individualistic definition then please educate me what in your 'expert opinion' one is supposed to call a DVD player/recorder with Freeview and hard drive, which allows one to make Personal Video Recordings from either a freeview tuner, satellite receiver via scart or any other video input via composite. :)
