Front Processor for 7000-S

Please could someone explain to me what version of 'FP' I should be using these days? Also, which is the current version of the official release of the image software?

I am currently using Gemini 2.2.0 released in August last year and I wish to update the lastest version of Gemini and/or PLi? I have not done so, I am not certain which is the current official image and the best version of FP.
 
I think that if you put either of those images into flash, then they will update your front processor, the Pli one certainly does. :)
 
Many thanks for your reply. I have a hard disk in my Dreambox containing two or three images and I use Flashwizard to access an image. The image I currently have in the flash memory is 2.6.9.
 
That's the Linux kernel version.

Whatever image you put in flash should update the FP if it's newer than what's there and then force a reboot.

I would only ever put an official Dream or updated base or CVS image in flash, and leave all the heavily modded images on USB. You'll need a later CVS image in flash to use the latest Gemini's and Davincis etc. A version was released with a December date IIRC.

It should tell you in the Gemini readme what base image it requires.
 
I am right in understanding that if I update the Flash memory with the lastest FP, it is not easy to go back to an earlier version?
 
Yes, that's my understanding.

Flashing an image requiring (or containing) an older FP than is in the memory will not trigger a downgrade in the same way as the reverse will trigger an upgrade. I don't know of any other way of doing it but it must be possible.

I usually wait a few weeks before moving onto a new version so that all those hot-blooded youngsters can test it out for me.

Excuse what must be obvious to everyone else, and I have searched really hard - honest - but what does 'CVS' stand for?
Think I have found them at a Czech olmi site, they list 'Official img' and 'CVS image', there were 2 CVS DM7000 images released in December as you said.
Is it ok to use these DM7000 images in a DM7000S?
As I will have to soon stop using my Hydra 1.09 image and go for one of the recommended ones, who makes the PLi image?

Can't remember what CVS stands for. It was listed in one of the readme's IIRC, but it's slipped through my conscious mind and into the mists of time :-rofl2. The readme's are full of useful info.

DM7000 and DM7000S are the same thing. The S denotes a satellite tuner, and is just missing off the first example. There are the possibilities of terrestrial and cable tuner options, but are pretty hard to find.

The PLi image comes from a new team, but has all the hallmarks of the old Hydra team. Who knows... ;)

Many thanks for your reply BGonaStick. As I understand it, the latest version of the 'official' image for the 7000s is 1.08 as given on www.dream-multimedia-tv.de. Where do the CVS versions of the images come from? Who actually produces them? Do you know which is the best the latest version of CVS to use in the flash memory and which version of the FP does it have?

Actually, I did a bit of digging and CVS stands for "Concurrent Versions System".

It's a name that (mainly Linux, apparently) developers give to a system of software development management where numerous people work on the different component parts of a system concurrently.

The software management system keeps track of all the bits and pieces of source and object code, applying rigourous version control to both the component parts and the whole, drawing it all together in one cohesive code release.

Where this is not an official, stable and fully tested release, it's known as a CVS release, or 'bag-o-shite'. Fortunately, there isn't too much to bu99er up in the Dreambox world, and the primary developers are actually pretty good at what they do.

I have a feeling that the 1.09 release was from DMM but not released publicly. This is probably where they stopped developing for the DM-7000 images, and moved on to the 7020. All the incremental releases are hacks and patches by the various open source developers, but hopefully performed in a pseudo-cooperative way.

I'm afraid I've lost track with the latest couple of CVS releases, as I'm still happily running a slightly older one. I'll research it again when I want to make a quantum leap in images (which will probably be fairly soon...)

Boxman seem to be the most upto date of the cvs images but there are a few others around, The best way is to sign up to a few of the forums the exist and have a look.
 
DMM did indeed release 1.09, on 14.03.2005, but not via their website.

Soon after came 1.09.1 beta... :D

Boxman released a CVS today, over at IHAD. That's what I would go for.
