My dad has just bought a nearly new sky +hd box. How is he able to watch free to air channels and be able to record them as well on a sky + hd box? He hasn't subscribed to sky.
Will he need a viewing card from Sky? If so how much?
Or can he receive fta channels without card?
Will he be able to watch in HD as well?

Thanks in advance.

You wont be able to record without a valid subscription mate, but you will be able to watch most of the Free to Air HD channels without the card.

You have to pay a "recording tax" of a tenner a month to use the pvr functions. Or take a minimum subscription out - that will automatically give you pvr functionality.

Could a current sky subscriber take out a multiroom contract and pay an extra tenner a month and then put that multiroom viewing card in the sky +hd box in a different household. Would that work as in theory would get the same channels as that current sky subscriber?

Yes, but then the Sky subscriber would start receiving threatening letters from Sky because both receivers must be connected to an active phone line to stop people doing such things.

One small but important extra point - both receivers have to be connected to the same active phone line
