There is a used Gibertini 1.25m Metre Aluminium/steel dish listed on eBay, the seller has added an interesting note.

I had the same problem with a Primsat 1.3 Aluminium dish, SSS would not sort it out apart from offering me some rubber to fill the gap : )

It has never performed as it should and now after less than 12 months all the paint has pealed off the bracket, which is why I am looking for a better quality dish.

Note as below from seller of used Gibertini 1.25m Metre Aluminium/steel dish listed on eBay : -

Lightwieght with good features...

A good, well engineered and finished product with excellent hardware accessories. As a trades person, requiring the maximum performance available from the dish, there was a concern re: the pressing accuracy of the reflector to back plate mating which resulted in a small gap around the middle bolt fixings & when tightened up resulted in mis-shaping the reflector face, shown up by "stringing" . Correcting the above gave a very good performing antenna.

Top marks to the seller who ever he is for his honesty : ) God Bless.

I have been looking at a 1.5 m £399 plus £110 carriage, why the price jump is so extreme with any increase in size is beyond me, it seams totally out of proportion.

I can understand the carriage costs being a lot higher but cannot see how the unit cost is justified, surely they are just pressed in a mold ?

£86 for a 1m. £190 for 1.2m £400 for 1.5m all rounded up by 1p.

Reading the eBay listing again this was a review by a different person to the seller.

Larger dishes generally require more precise manufacturing due to narrower beamwidths. Also, please note that dish sizes are exponential - a 1.2m dish has over double of working surface area of an 80cm dish.

That be me then ..... i'm the buyer not the seller.
That discrepancy between the two mating surfaces was a complete No No which would have led to the dish's effeciency being well affected if i had not corrected it via assembly modification. The engineering of the rest of it was quite good compared to some of the other stuff out there.
My 1.2 Gibby is used on Ka band so maximum reflector efficiency is a must have for me.

Do you know if this is a common fault ?

It could be that some would not realise the difference it will make and just bolt it up, which once done could with Aluminium be permanent I think.

I have heard about stringing but not as yet looked far enough to find a description I could follow completely.

Did you just pack out the gap between the rear of the dish and the bracket ?

Kind Regards Allen

I'm not sure if anybody else has had the issue Allen, i too was hoping that other Gibby owners would have chirped up after looking at their own but not up to now. I ended up not tightening up the centre two fixings as this really distorted the dish shape. Only by stringing the dish whilst assembling showed up the problem. I loosened off the centre bolts enough to enable me to squeeze in some good quality silcone to completely fill all the affected gaps and then tightened up the two middle bolts after two days or so after the silicone had cured properly. With stringing in place i tightened up onto the cured silicone to the point where distortion just started to creep in. I went overboard with strengthening the rear of the reflector to ensure it stayed in the right place & shape for Ka reception even in windy conditions. If the dish was only going to be used on strong Ku frequencies i would not have gone to those extremes.

Edit: You can see more of this problem Allen if you scroll down this thread of mine ----
