Well it hasn't happened yet

(actually it has, a few times but the binary is some 2950 light years away)
 
So if it did pop today (at it's location) we wouldn't see it for 2950 years, so it had to of popped 2950 years ago for us to see it sometime this year.

It would depend how close you mght be when it happened/happens/might happen/never actually happened.
