Good satellite meter on a budget?

You would need a meter capable of giving NIT readout. Probably cheaper using a FTA receiver and scanning to see where you are.
 
My dishes are 100m away across the garden, burn and through a woodland so isn't feasible
 
It really depends on your budget. I've got a SatPlus SH998, which is very useful and cost me about £130. It doesn't have a spectrum or identify satellites. However, you can scan a sat once you get a signal and identify it though the channels you receive. Really it's a sat receiver with a built in LCD screen which runs on batteries. I wouldn't be without it now.
 
Thanks, I think I know the ones you mean, seem to be lots on ebay for about £70 - £100+. So is the lcd screen really useful and would be a vast improvement on the rubbish satfinder i currently struggle with?
 
Yes definitely an improvement over needle and tone meter. The LCD screen shows you strength, quality and a BER reading. Once locked on to a signal, scan the sat, then switch over to see the results. It is difficult to see in strong sunlight, but that's about it's only drawback. You'd soon get used to the screensize. I'd have found it almost impossible to set up my multisat without it. I have had my FS1 for months and is very good, set the motorised dish up wihin 15 mins. It will not tell what Sat you are on, but I found if I configure it. It indicates by locking on to that Sat I want. It is very responsive.
 
Horizon nano sat cost about £150-£180 this meter will tel you when the chosen satellite is found and even has on screen indicactors to show what direction to turn the dish. Downsides are it can only store four sat locations at any one time defaults are 28.2,19.2 and 13 east, you download new satellite packs from the horizon website via USB link.
works well for me as I'm just going into frees at/euro satellite installations.
