Grill from gas cylinder

I started to post some pictures and thoughts on this somewhere else, but I feel that this small project deserves to be separate as stay-alone. So, some time ago, friend of mine gave me 50L cylinder. I let all gas out, filled it with water, made some cuts, made table out of old sewing machine. I also have an idea to use pedal to pump air inside the grill, especially during the start of burning. Of course, I have normal grill to cook eat, but this one will be just for fun. It is "make something from nothing" project.
I need to find some parts for continuation, such as handles, bigger wheels, design the way how to connect turbine to the pedal and the way how to distribute air inside the cylinder. I should also think about way how the ash will be removed after grilling. Painting is another issue: should I paint the cylinder, leave it as it is, or just remove any paint? Any thoughts or ideas (even crazy) are welcome.

Forget the paint, if you get it to burn, the heat will remove most paints anyway, unless you use a decent high temperature paint.
Forget the tread-wheel air blow idea. As all pyromaniacs know, fire is fuelled by air from the sides, or below. Drill about 8 -10 holes on both sides of the drum about 15-20 mm below wood/charcoal plate height. This will give perfect airflow for combustion. Better still, after drilling holes put a slide plate across the holes, inside or out, so you can restrict the air flow as required during cooking.
Keep the spinning wheel for a rotisserie spindle for chicken or suckling pig!
Also, nice practice job, get a new 100L cylinder for the big fish you are going to catch soon

AH! Forgot the ash removal bit. Using jigsaw, cut out rectangular hole in bottom of cylinder approx 10 cm wide and 20 cm less than half the overall length of cylinder, ensuring it is cut from the centre line when measured from right to left. Cut section removed in half. Using suitable light weight steel plate, add wings to both sections of off-cut and add handle to be used to slide from underside. Place both halves of cut out ( with wings ) inside the bottom of the cylinder ( with handles protruding out of the bottom ) and close the hole.
After cooking, slide two cut outs aside to clear ash and waste food.

Just remember, the gas bottle remains the property of the company who supplied it, which translates to, you've lost your deposit...

Painting's simple enough though using readily available stove paints, which seem to be coming in many colours these days rather than the traditional lead-black of old, so plenty of choice as to what colour you want to paint it...

Aprciate if you draw, but, as you probably already suspect, sometimes I ask questions just to ask.... in reality, I already decided couple of steps ahead what to do and how to do . But, that certainly does not mean I can not change my mind and make some adjustments in general plan.

This is old cylinder, and no more belongs to anybody except me, so, no problem here. Moreover, it is possible to buy such a cylinders in any scrapyard.
Good joke about "blue paint"! Do not worry, I do not have too much blue (with hammer effect) paint left.

Assuming underside of BBQ



Cut out section as roughly indicated, add handles ( yellow ) add 10cm " sides " to inside of cut out, on sides and one end, one without handle. Drop back in from inside of cylinder. Allows sliding hole to open at bottom of BBQ for cleaning.
Ensure cut outs are painted green, yellow, red, orange, violet, ........

Thinking on, you have probably already built it, done a drop hatch with a hinge and it´s already blue.

Worked on air-turbine adjustments to the pedal. 115mm long axis is made of brass, it turns inside aluminum block (rest is INOX ). Belt is an issue... made temporary one out of electrical cable, but should look for way how to make normal one out of leather perhaps. If pedal is powered (not so hard) like on this VIDEO that there are about 1000 rpms, which is enough to make decent airflow.

Weather has improved today (yesterday was cats&dogs), so decided to have some fun with angle-grinder and made couple of hatches in the cylinder

One hatch will be for removal of the ash fro the grill. Another one I made in shape of " tortoise ninja mask" for distribution of the air inside the grill. There are 2 long pipes on the bottom of the cylinder, each pipe has 22 holes along its length .W ill think how to attach fan to the pipe outside the cylinder .
To remove paint and remaining of the gas-smell, burned some wood in the grill . It kept heat about 3 hours . Distance from skewers to the layer of coal is about 8-9cm

We had a couple over today, they spotted my new grill and wanted to try it. I've said it is not finished, but that did not help. So, we had first grilling of some sausages, meat and potatoes. It worked well.

If you were invited to BBQs then you might learn from some of the designs out there, and there are plenty.

Got couple of wheels, will be adjusting them to grill legs.
Inserted thermometer, made handle from oak, and also adjusted vertical pipe (for white smoke ). Friday will have couple of friends over, so need to prepare the grill

But now you know!
Except air-turbine, my new grill is ready. Wheels are in place and by lifting grill by handle it is easy not to move it around. Rain started and I relocated grill inside the garage. Air-flow inside the cylinder can be adjusted by plate on the top of the pipe.
