A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

A friend has just managed to destroy his VCR, and has both a FTA digital box and motorised system and TV aerial.

Since he uses it only to record analogue terrestrial TV or the French AB moteurs channel when hes down the pub, and does not archive anything for posterity, he needs something new to continue, the idea of buying yet another VCR so close to the ubiqutous MPEG stream recording days is no a viable option. He has no wish to take up BSKYBs generous offer and monthly highway robbery.

Is there any box on the market that allows either

1) recording from an analogue source or composite input from his existing aerial/output from TV

2) a direct MPEG output from any ITV Digital box (he may take up the offer from them if all else fails)

I have looked at some of the european offerings of CI receiver and hard disk storage but these have no converter inside for analogue to MPEG

OK probably too specialist

Another question

If I get a satellite receiver with built in storage and recording facility, and I record digital satellite which is encrypted

1) does the unit record the channel once it has been decoded only or

2) Is there a way of recording the channel without decrypting, and the decoding path made available later via the PCMCIA slot and then out to the rear panel connections
