New 2TB Freesat box hard drive runs constantly despite no recordings in progress.

If it is new send it back to where you got it, oddly enough you do not say which model it is
 
The hard drive will be storing data regardless of whether you are recording since it controls the pause, review and cue functions.
 
^^ Yup as CH says its caching programming for instant rewind.
 
Does the HD run when the box is in stand-by? If yes, does it power down after a certain time?
 
My virgin box often runs when its on standby but eventually stops. I think its checking the accounts to make sure I am not getting access to anything I am not supposed too.
