We may soon have the THIRD uncontrolled satellite re-entry in as many months. The Russian Mars explorer mission Phobos-Grunt is stranded in low earth orbit after the main boosters failed to fire. So far all attempts to contact the craft have been unsuccessful, and if the mission is abandoned the craft will re-enter in late November - early December.

At 13 tons this craft is much bigger than the other two that have come down in recent weeks. :eek:

This time the danger zone is between 51N/51S
 
Never mind the spectacle created by the untimely re-entry ...
I'm gutted that we wont get the probe on Mars ..
Its always been a passion of mine ...Mars ...
and desperately hope to live long enough to see first human footprints there..
So much waste ..so many cutbacks means this is unlikely ...and failures like this continue to stack the odds against future missions ..
My legs..fingers and toes are crossed that a miracle happens ..and control regained.

Ive always loved following the space missions. I can just remember the Apollo moon shots of the 1970's, and even the later unmanned missions out to the planets have been followed avidly.

Good to see this week that the Voyager probes are still operational way way out beyond Pluto. V-2 has been switched over to the backup thrusters - 34 years after launch :)

Nice to hear from another enthusiat AS ..
I guess my attitude is somewhat poetic..
..but I am of that generation inspired by Genes vision when he created Star Trek ..
The simple premise ..that The world will one day unite in the common goal of travelling beyond the confines of our tiny corner of the Western Spiral Arm ...
Differences settled ...wars a thing of the past...the search for true knowledge a priority.
It saddens me that I wont be around to see such a global revolution...if it ever comes.
I'll be sat alongside my hero's such as Carl Sagan ...assuming there is an existance beyond.....

I too have dreamed of seeing mankind walk on the Martian surface before I pop my clogs.

The way things are going though if Im lucky I might just about live long enough to see another moonwalk..

On dark clear nights I often go and stand in the garden and watch the satellites go over. Ive seen the space station dozens of times and I still get a buzz when I see it racing over away to the south.
