HD installation - Just been asked

Never been asked to do a HD, so I put in a normal single lnb and zone 1 dish and it didn't work, says I need two cables. Do I just put a twin lnb in? and will it work with a quad? Or is they a specialist lnb I need. Thanks in advance. So what I am asking is it a normal install but with 2 down leads?
 
Quad LNB and twin cable run, job done.
 
There's no basic difference between an HD install and a "normal" install.

If it's asking for two cables then it's a PVR (personal video recorder). You don't say exactly which Freesat receiver it is but my PVR, a Humx Foxsat HDR, can work of either one or two cables. It's just more restrictive of what you can watch whilst recording if you have a single cable.

If your receiver definitely won't work without a second cable (and I'd be surprised if that's the case) then the quad LNB will be fine, just run a second cable. What is the exact message you're getting that stops the install?

are you replacing sky for freesat? what type of box is your freesat hd?
single or twintuner etc
 
Installation wise, for HD, you don't need to do anything extra to a working dish currently receiving SD. Just make sure you have spot on alignment.

Well, from your question, and looking at your dish set up & quad lnb then if you have a Freesat+ receiver then all you need is another run of cable to the receiver from you existing quad lnb, and it will work perfectly.
If you have a Freesat HD, not the + receiver then a single cable feed is all you need.
 
Moved to a more appropriate thread, the problem doesn't appear to be install related, but as Paul has mentioned, without the receiver make / model it's going to be difficult to advise whether the fix is simply down to reprogramming the receiver, or the box actually won't function without a twin LNB (which is more unlikely).

When you say Freesat though, is it truly a Freesat receiver, or are you using a Sky HD box ?
 
Hi this is an install question, I am an installer. To answer various questions this is not an install on my own set up, its a customer. He has just told me he has a Goodmans 500gb freesatplus HD box. I plugged in a cable from the single lnb (alignment spot on on my meter) to both tuner 1 and tuner 2. (the box has twin tuners), I got 0 signal so when it searched it wouldn't find a thing. From reading other replies I am going to run twin cables from a twin lnb, I presume that will then work?
 
What meter are you using? Does it have NIT? Have you confirmed the dish is correctly aligned to Astra2?
 
I am using a horizon usb+ digital satellite meter, picks up astra 2 perfectly from lnb. A user above commented you need 2 cables on free sat plus boxes, trying that in the morning.
 
The Horizon (well the one I have used in the past) did get a couple of transponder parameters on another satellite when the Astra 2 group was highlighted from the listings, even after an upgrade.

As proof you have the correct satellite it might be worth plugging in another receiver (your one ?) just to be sure.

Trial and error and my horizon meter, thought it worth the outlay for the jobs to come. Never been wrong before but i'll borrow a friends and try with that.
 
Without a meter with NIT, a good tip would be to keep an old FTA STB in the back of the van to aid satellite identification. Identification can then be achieved by scanning for channels and seeing whether the channels that were expected appear.

Been to a few jobs where the previous incompetent installer without the necessary equipment has fooled both the customer and themselves that the dish is correctly aligned.
 
An old sky digibox connected to the dish would confirm you have Astra2 alignment.

Absolutely!

If you're only interested Astra 2 transmissions then an old Digibox is perfect as it will ignore other satellites with a vengeance. I used Digiboxes for years for aligning the few dishes I did.
