if you install windows 7 by booting not upgrade
you will come across the options box
where you could see your partitions ,and choce which one to install it on
i had to main one was c drive then second as storage
got the option to fresh install and format there
but i dont see the partitions there
missing drivers....

Try removing the hard drive and loading Windows 98 on another PC, then put it back in the laptop, boot up and load a later Operating System.

I have come across many problems, with SATA hard drives, and different motherboards, not all drivers are included, especially on XP, I have had to load SATA drivers on a couple of PC's prior to loading Windows, you can install the hard drive, and format it, but as Windows start to load you need to load the SATA drivers or it just continually re-boots.

I have also had problems with a 1 TB hard drive, which wouldn't load Windows until I partitioned it, I could never get the hard drive to fully work with the motherboard, even with all the latest updates, but it did work when I partitioned it to 60/40, changed the motherboard, a few months later, and it worked immediately.

When you try combining various manufacturers, and countries, hardware you run into all kinds of problems.

Are you sure the recovery partition has been deleted? I read another thread that suggested holding down the 0 key invoked the recovery utility

going to getr another harddrive for it if if just slip the old one out
and replace it with the new one ,will i need to load drivers for it

Depends what OS you want to install. As Mickha said not all drivers are included. XP was supplied on new machines for quite a few years and if you had an early installation disk it wouldn't have as many drivers as one of the later versions. Have you checked here to see if there is any info (or drivers) to help?
