Hello: Help for sky+ in paralimini

Hello all.
I joined this forum to try and find out information that doesnt seem readily available!
So far looks like you guys may be able to help, firstly thanks for setting this forum up, not sure if im posting in the right section, had a look around and it seems right! lol

My parents are currently in the UK subscribing to Sky+ with an extra digi box.
They are moving to Cyprus in the next 6 months and are wanting to take the system with them.

I installed my own sky + Satelite dish and reciever in my flat with no problems at all. (I install CCTV for a living; Simular cables etc.)

Many bars and resturants in Cyprus have Sky and i wondered what was the cheapest option to install it over in Paralimni. They wont have bundles of room on the roof as there are already many dishes up there for others in the apartment block.

There not too bothered about getting any other packages except the sky world they already subscribe to, as mum couldnt handle missing eastenders and dad the football.

Could anyone please advise if it possible to get the package over there and also what would be needed, i assume it isnt a case of simply setting up the existing dish and reciever and pointing it at the sattelite (that just seems to easy!) LOL

Please, any advice would be greatly apprecieated.

Welcome to the Forum, have a look in the 'Members who install Satellite Systems' section, there is a guy (Iceman) form North Cyprus, he should be able to help you out. They are going to need a huge dish. I was in Ayia Napa last summer and remember seeing titanic dishes that were about 5-6 meters!!

Have moved this to the Fringe reception section for Sky Digital. As timbo86 says, to receive Sky you need a largish dish, but to receive BBC and ITV, you need a huge dish, the size of which can be anything from 3m to 4.5m, depending on which side of the island you are.

It is possible to receive almost all the SKY package + BBC's & ITV1 channel in Cyprus..The signal strenght from Astra group of satellites varies on different parts of the island..Strongest region being far west (paphos) 2.7m dish is enough for the weakest Astra which is 2D in Paphos..But as you go east the dish size has to be increased to compensate for the signal loss...Ayia Napa/Paralimini area requires a dish over 4m for trouble free reception and the most popular dish over there is 4.2m Jonsa prime focus dish.

Chances are they will be able to share one of the dishes already there....If not then 1.8m will do most of the sky package, though I recommend a 2.4m as it tends to give a good few quality channels such as C4. This won't help your mum with her Eastenders though as that will require the 4m dish (sky sports can be done on a 1.8 no probs).

Another option will be to choose Paphos. If BBC/ITV are that important then you can have a 2.7m Quality DH dish installed for around C£700 new.

On the subject of Sky Plus, make sure you use one of the Pace V2 or V3 models. The others aren't really in the same ball park! Multi room doesn't work so you will have to cancel that part if you have it right now.

So if a 180cm dish would be adequate do i just buy one? Any ideas if the LNB from the original Digi dish work? or would i need to purchase a special one?

They are comparable in gain to a quality dish two thirds of the size, are made of very weak material and are time consuming for a experienced installer to get the most out of. Quality will count here so get in touch with one of the guys on this forum who are out there when you are ready . Please keep asking questions in the meantime though :D

This dish on the Maplin website is made by FortecStar and should be avoided at all costs.
You say there are already dishes on the roof of the block. You could talk to any other expat, if there are any, with a large dish there and pay for the LNB to be upgraded to provide two or four outputs, and run an extra cable to the apartment. One of the specialist installers (see previous posts) should be able to sort this for you.
 
You could live with a smaller dish and get Eastenders on BBC prime, it's not on the sky package so it will mean another package through Orbit or somthing like that. It will keep your mum happy.

Iceman thanks a lot for all the impressive photos available at your link. I've got just one question: Do the 2.7m in Pafos or 4.2m in Agia Napa get really all the frequencies from 28.2E/28.5E ? At least in Greece there are regions where the H's are easy to get and the V's require much larger dishes and opposite depending on the location. Here we have an example: http://www.satfreaks.gr/forum/showthread.php?t=114&page=2 This monster of 6.20m installed by Antonis Zacharioudakis in Crete gets everything although the ITVs are weaker than the BBCs.
 
Apart from the vertical transponders on 2D almost all is available in Cyprus..
To my knowledge,2D vertical transponders are not available after Austria and even then fairly large dish is required..
 
Ah, no verticals. Thanks for the info. :)

Well i can tell you that in Rodos some verticals break through on 2.40m and also east of Beograd on 1.80m, both PFA. But some people with 2.40m anywhere in between don't get neither H nor V. Austria does get all with 80cm in the extreme West and loses also some frequencies with 3m in the extreme East.
 
Gee you guyz in Cyprus must have HUGE back gardens to accomodate those dishes and we think we are using big dishes in the UK/Ireland at 1.8metres !!!!!!!!:) :) :)
 
Thats why we have flat rooves ;)
