Hi, I appreciate this forum is riddled with help posts/stickies but I'm coming at a pretty dim level :confused:

My location is NE Manchester which Google says is 53.6, -2.11 , but I don't really know what this means.

When I look at google/bing and stick a protractor on my screen, the rear of my house is pointing ESE 69° ( i.e. if due south is 0°), alternatively if you consider north is 0°, then rotating clockwise my house view is 111°.

I have got a pile of bits that I want to make into a working system:-
MVision HD200 receiver.
A solid dish measuring 800mm high/700mwide with a single LNB
A metronic 450908 motor
cables/brackets etc.

If I mount the satellite on my rear wall, will I be able to get the desired range sweep? This is in the context that I live in a terrace row.
Is an 800x700 dish big enough to get middle east satellites?

I've read the best satellite to set a datum on is Thor 1°West? is that recommended?
If I consider that on a rotating clock that 0<>180° is east...then does that mean Thor is 181° ?? i.e. 1 click next to due south?

All guidance welcome. Once I at least get the dish installed and lined up, then I will drop the receiver and progress into understanding all these fancy dreambox receivers.

Well the first thing to do is have a look at dishpointerThe second thing to do is throw away the protractor unless you plan on doing some geometry classes soon.The arc of satellites (known as the Clarke Curve) that is in geostationary orbit around the equator is what you are hoping to get your equipment to track. Google says 53.6, -2.11 which is a latitude of 53.6North and longitude of 2.11 West of the Greenwich meridium. So your assumption of 1 deg West being your datum or highest point on the Clarke curve is correct.If North is 0 deg then East is 90 deg, South is 180 deg and West is 270 deg however, because we are in the Northern hemisphere and the Clarke curve is around the equator relative to you in Manchester the arc is South of you.Therefore South is 0 degrees and 270 degrees is 90West of South and 90 degrees is 90 East of South, both these are shortened to 90W and 90EHowever from your location your maximum line of site of satellites on the arc is actually from approximately 70East to 70 West, the rest being below the horizon to the East and West.There are numerous sticky posts about how to install your motorised dish setup in the dish installation forum

Just follow the instructions and it will show you where best to site your dish.

Another quick method is to look where Sky dishes are sited, on your neighbours houses, these are pointing at the Astra 2 satellite, 28.2E, so by moving 30 degrees west, of this point, you get roughly to due South. If you stand behind the dish, facing away from the house, you swing right to move West, so just rotate about 30 degrees to your right.

The dishpointer site is very handy and has helped me deduce my sweep range is approx 20°W to 160°E , generally my house seems to face ~65°E.

Now I have a motor, I want to explore further than SKY and basically my objective is to find as much freebie footy as I can get. Thats why I asked would a 800mm height x 700mm wide dish be big enough.
The dishpoint site listed these as 'popular' satellite for UK users
28.2Astra ( which I pressume is SKY)
13EHotbird
19.2E Astra
16E Sesat
26E Arabsat

Are the above the main places to go...or are there better places outside my 20°W<> 160°E sweep ? If so I would consider mounting the bracket high up on the house apex to maximise view.
Finally I assume that my motor ( Metronic 450908 ) only actually moves 180°....right ?
 
Motor only moves 75 degrees either side of Datum and you can further restrict this by means of set screws under the motor body and by setting firmware limits in the Receiver.

This is a wide enough sweep anyway as the horizon restricts line of sight to around 65 degrees either way from your own position.
 
As for free Football, there is very little indeed these days and even "Feeds" tend to be encrypted or have uncommon modulation techniques assigned.

Your best bet is to obtain a "foreign" subscription to a decent package eg Viasat (There are a few others, but each has its limitations)

Your easternmost bird in the UK will be around 60E or just past

Theres a reasonable amount of free football around - especially if you want to watch Iranian or Moroccan games :D.

If you want uk Premiership you will have to pay for a (foreign?) subscription as the games are not transmitted in the clear.

Subscriptions vary from a few hundred pounds a year to nearer £2k/yr if you want all the games in HD.
 
Should I treat 'datum' as 64.5°E INMARSAT if thats the most perpendicular to my house?

Whats the best service to get EPL footy ? I'm a Man City fan so wondered if there were Emirates based satellites that might show more 'Etihad' sponsored sports.

Intelsat - well it depends what your view is like out to the southeast - it will be almost on the horizon.

If you have house in the way, or a hill, or a tree you wont get the really low elevation birds.

For example - Im restricted to 53E because there is a hill in the way.

No.

Your datum is your South Satellite ie the one whose position is closest to your Longitude.

Normally Thor at 1W or AB3 at 5W depending upon where in "UK" you actually are. These things are important.

But if you are like the rest of us and immediately upgrade to a larger dish, this satellite also gives you some material from your location.

In Manchester the Pennines or housing estates will probably be in the way!
