Help - freesat /sky+ question

A sky+ receiver will only be any good if your dish is aligned to Astra2. Your reference to 'freeview', assume you mean freesat or a standard generic free to air receiver.

I'm a little confused by that question too - I presume he literally does not have his own satellite as it seems to suggest ! ... But the question seems in some way similar to mine. As a complete beginner, never even having (or ever desired) Sky, I asked for and have been given my neighbours old Sky Digibox - it has no card in it, but if I buy myself a dish, LNB etc, will I be able to get anything at all for free just to give us an introduction? I'd rather learn that way before buying more advanced equipment that I really would not understand yet. If I can at least show the family something for now, the SWMBO may not squeak as much when I learn more and open my wallet 
(I hoped to learn from reading these forums - but most of it I'm not sure is even english! I mean just take some extracts "with embedded seca 1.5" eh? I mean, do I want one of those, does it hurt, can you pull it back out again? then "C Band", "B Band"... eh? .... Is there an idiots guide somewhere that starts at the very basic level and does not assume you understand these things to bring me up to speed on what on earth all this esoteric jargon means so I don't ask silly questions?

The Digibox is really only suited for watching the channels broadcast on Astra 2 at 28E - which is where $ly and Freesat are. It CAN be used pointing at other satellites in a very limited fashion but it's a huge hassle. If you want other satellites buy a better receiver!
With an old Digibox, but less a card, you're limited to the FTA (free to air) channels only. That's basically the Beeb, ITV and Channel 4 plus numerous shopping and God channels. There are some lesser channels such as the Zone (or whatever they're called now) group.
An expired $ly subscription card will give a few more FTV (free to view) channels such as $ly 3, Five (even though it's FTA on Freesat boxes) Fiver and Five USA. You can but this Freesat from $ly card new for £20 if you want.
There are usually old $ly dishes down at your local recycling centre. You can also try your local Freegle or Freecycle group (both part of he Yahoo groups community). Coincidentally I have just given away three old $ly dishes on my local Freegle group!

Numenius, you could do worse than read up some of the handy sections elsewhere on this forum, not all of them are tecky to the point they are beyond beginners comprehension.
As mentioned above, the Sky box really is more of a limitation to you as they are designed to do one thing only, relieve subscribers of ever increasing amounts of money from their bank accounts.
Since yours was free though, you can at least start out on watching TV from space, all you need is a dish with LNB, some cable and a clear bit of sky near where the sun is at 11 in the morning.
