Help me find astra 2

Hi folks,
O.k i bought a dish off a friend put a new black ultra quad on it pointed it around a bit and hey presto good signal strength adjusted elevation and skew great signal. Problem is i have picked up a whole bunch of German channels although cnn is in english. I have tried to find other satellites but if i go further east i get saudi arabia channels so how far off from my beloved bbc am i. My elevation on the dish is 46 which is not quite right me thinks, i live in madrid post code 28794 if that helps. I would appreciate it if someone could let me know how far east or west i am of from the correct spot also if my elevation is picking up german t.v at 46 what would it need to be for astra 2. You probably need a bigger dish for the BBC channels:

suggests over 2m is needed for decent reception of the BBC & other channels!

Astra 28.2 is four or so degrees lower than Astra 19.2.

All the satellites that can be viewed from the earth are on what is known as the Clarke curve see picture, thus the elevation is different for different satellites

Lower means that you have to slacken off the satellite clamps and point the dish a little lower in the sky. If you look at Topper's diagram you can see why - as you go from one side to the other satellites appear to be arranged in a circular line .

Ok, the dish is plenty big enough for Madrid. I'm watching Match of the Day right now and I'm using the same dish and LNB in a much worse signal area at the worst time of day.

The elevation scale on that dish is pretty accurate. Set it at 33º to start with. Go back to where the arabic channels are, badr 4/6, and then move the dish a fraction more to the east. Move it about the width of the LNB. When I've set up multi LNBs in the past for Astra 2 and Arabsat the LNBs are touching so this should give you an idea just how close you are.

If you've got ITV and BBC you are definitely on the right Satellite - If they were also on 19.2E there'd be thousands of very happy bunnies out there!

You are on the right satellite... but... to do this properly you are going to need a decent meter. In England with a mini dish anyone or his granny could tune in 28.2E almost blindfolded but here you need to be really accurate. I find on my setup that the threshold of BBC1, ITV1, etc is 2 clicks from the centreline on my 1224 motor. This means the difference between having the satellite nailed and completely no quality is less than 0.25º.

So it appears that i have found astra well sort of. i have a good picture on bbc1 good picture on itv but no bbc2 or much else apart from sky channels which are encrypted. After all the hard work and kind advice do i now need to get someone in with a really good meter. How come i get bbc 1 and not 2. Should i fiddle up down right or left or not at all

2d horizontal transponders are a difficult catch for that region and not normally received 24/7.

Read Embalse's reports from Madrid:
Channel Master 1.2 with CM feed horn and Invacom C120 quad LNB,
Channel Master 1.8 with Black Ultra quad LNB.

Just to sum up, the 1.2 is very flaky for reception of 2D horizontals, but, the 1.8 gets them 24/7. Your dish should perform closer to the 1.8 than the 1.2.

The only channels on horizontals but not verticals are: BBC2/3/4, CBBC, CBeebies, Channel 4 and Five.

The problem was with the box it was searching for 19.2 but satellite was pointing at 28.2 gave me itv and bbc1 but told me it was 19.2.
I changed the settings to search for 28.2 and the channels came in thick and fast, hundreds. I have tweeked it a little here and a little there and seem to have fairly good signal although bbc1 started to break up last night at around 8 pm
But hey i have managed it with help from you guys, thanks for all the help and advice:-worship
I live in Guadalix de la sierra (Madrid) in case anyone lives nearby.
One more thing my sustem cost a mere €100 not bad eh.........The guy i got the dish from was told it was too big.
