help me lose my satellite virginity

first of all big hello

right the plan is to cancel my sky+ hd and replace it with a system that i could keep the HD and the recording stuff, but i would also like to watch 3pm football, ppv boxing and everything else :confused: that might excite me. also planning on CS but we dont talk about here but just want to make sure im buying the right hardware.

this is my shopping list so far...

DM800 HD PVR [receiver]
dish
motor
lnb
wall bracket
cable + clips + ends etc

and i guess i got a few question like...
1) how big do u need my dish?? i guess like everything in life the bigger the better but how small is too small? (its going to be placed on the roof of a 6 floor building id that helps) i was thinking 80cm but im not sure why lol...

2) what lnb will i need? does hd require lower db's or is that marketing shite? i guess the lower the decibels the less interferences - but how do i choose? and whats the advantage of having a twin or more lnbs (for multiple receivers?)

im on a limited budget and dont want to spend on anything unnecessary but at the same time would like a decent system that wont piss me off everytime i change channel.

any other advice would be much appreciated.

The dish size will depend a little on the length of cable from roof to your apartment/room where the receiver will be.

Normally an 80-90cm dish will suffice, I tend to use the Fracarro Penta 85 for my motorised installations. Don't get suckered into the HD LNB sales pitch, there is no such thing as HD ready on an LNB and the given noise figures can be pretty unreliable.

If you will be mounting 6 storeys up, make sure you have a substantial mount, a set of T&K brackets and a piece of scaffold pole are a sound investment, along with some good quality sleeve anchors.
 
You might want a satellite meter.
 
If you are intending to run just one receiver with a single tuner, you only need a single LNB. However, if you intended to run more receivers or maybe a twin tuner, you will need an lnb with more outputs. i.e one output per tuner. There are twins,quads and octos. But only one tuner can ever control the motor.
 
I'd start with a twin (or quad) LNB and one extra cable, just in case you don't see eye to eye with the DM800 and want to substitute it for another PVR model.
If it is six floors up, the dish mount will need additional tethering to something really solid, so add a couple of cable ties.

The motor is also going to suffer, so get a good one.

ill make sure it wont blow away lol... also does anyone have any reccomendations on where the best(cheapest) place to buy all this is... and do you know if the DM800 can record a different channel to the one you're watching + how manny at a time??

The 800 has a single tuner only so allows recording of one channel and viewing another on the same transponder. Believe you can record two channels also on the one transponder.
