Help needed in Graz

My Satellite Setup
Panasonic Sky box with 85cm dish on balcony stand. Vivanco 40mm LNB, 0.2dB
My Location
Graz, Austria
I live just east of Graz in Austria. I brought a Panasonic Sky box and card from the UK last week.
I bought a Hirschmann 85cm dish and put it on a balcony stand. I used a satfinder to zero in on 162 at elevation of 34.5 and as far as I can tell, I have a great signal. Problem is, no response from network i.d. or transponder stream.
Would be grateful for any suggestions. I know that I have no chance of Astra 2D with Beeb and ITV but I thought I might at least get Sky 1 to break the monotony of the news in 15 minutes every 15 minutes! (Sky News- yawn).
 
Well, you should be able to pick up the 11778V default OK. Perhaps you are on the wrong satellite. Do a scan of a transponder in ADD additional channels, and see what it comes up with.
 
If you have no network id & transponder stream, it's possible your satfinder meter had picked up only noise and in effect your not actually on a satellite.
 
I have just tried and there is 'no signal'. I suppose I could be receiving a spurious signal from the satfinder as suggested by Satelliteman but if so, it is very consistently wrong and the compass direction lines up pretty accurately with suggestions from various websites). Would you suggest trying a new LNB (mine is a Vivanco .2 and according to the packaging has a '22kHz changeover between low and high band' - maybe it is just faulty) or cable (Vivanco coax 75 ohm).
 
You can't rely on compass direction, for many reasons including that the metal in the dish will affect the reading. Do a scan see if any channels come up.
 
I just pointed the dish to the east to start looking for the satellite again. I noticed that on my TV, the indicator shows a very good signal strength and quality even with my hand over the LNB. It disappears completely as soon as I detatch the cable but returns immediately when I reattach it. Is this normal?

Sounds to me like you need to go back and re-check your F-connectors, perhaps there is a strand of braid shorting one end out that you have not spotted. I would also suggest trying another satellite just for fun and lastly try to ensure that you have the dish pointing correctly regarding elevation it should look like the picture below. The dish should be generally horizontal and the signal comes in from above

I just tried my Austrian receiver and it found a 92% signal strength with 26% quality on Eurobird.
I have reconnected my sky box and tuned it to 11.469 on 27500H, 2/3 and the TV
The network id jumped from 0000 to 0002 and the transport stream changed to 0961.
Guide page showed loads of programmes and every radio station. It was obviously downloading the data because the clock and calendar setting are correct.
Unfortunately, slecting any of the highlighted programmes results in a 'no signal' message.

Latest Update: I am now receiving good reception on all of the Channel Five suite using 11.469H! Its a bit of a narrow choice but after 9 months watching Sky News and CNN, it is fantastic.

Advice on how I might tune in to Sky 1 greatly appreciated. Would it be worth trying to rotate the LNB slighlty?
 
Maybe your dish is not optimised, make sure it is by adjusting the dish and skew as necessary to get the best quality reading. This is not the easiest thing to do using a Sky box, so you could use your Austrian receiver as a signal quality meter.

Once there is a good signal, it should just be a matter of waiting for the receiver to update itself.
 
Also the sky box will have a small delay in signal level results as you move the dish :)
 
Thanks guys. This is a really slow process and the worst of it is that I am moving in a month so I will have to do it all again!
 
you could do with a nice little meter like a digisat pro that will help you

also did you skew the lnb by turning it clockwise to improve the signal level

I just wanted thank everyone for their help. I was sitting watching Channel 5 wondering whether to risk losing it in a vain attempt to find a signal on 11778V and I thought I would risk it. Five minutes later, I am watching Top Gear on Dave!
I thought it might help future expats to know how.
I simply rotated the LNB in an anticlockwise direction to about the 10 o'clock position and the data stream suddenly appeared! Another word of note for satellite officianados. The Vivanco LNB is not a great shape for fitting in round holders. It has flat sides which tend to force it into a vertical postion. You have to try pretty hard to clamp it at any other angle.
