Help needed, which LNB? Grundig GDS200,set up info??

Hi, apologies if this post is in the wrong place. I need help setting up Sky digital in Murcia Spain. I have inherited a old Grundig Digibox GDS200/1 from my inlaws who live a few kms away, it worked fine until a few months ago when they lost BBC2, they were 'pursueded' by their local Sky installer that they needed a new Pace DS430N and parted with 350 euros??
I'm going to buy a 1.2m dish that I've seen second hand but it has no LNB with it, what spec LNB do I need? with this set up, will I recieve the Free to air chanels with no card? I believe ITV went free to air on Nov 1st as the other expats in my area are recieving it with no card, however they are all using Pace 2600 or DS340n boxes, is the Grundig compatible?

Hi

The short answer is yes, you will be able to receive all the FTA channels with the Grundig. However they are a poor choice for your location. The tuners aren't very sensitive and I believe they have issues with software that means they will not update to the latest software version. The FTV cards (also expired sky cards) will get you lots of channels but most noteably C4 & C5. FTV cards are available on Ebay or if you know someone with a sky subsciption they can get you one for £20.

I always recommend 0.3db invacoms - there are many others that will also do, but invacoms are in a class of their own!

I'm going to assume you have a offset dish as prime focus dishes are uncommon at 1.2m. Therefore you will require an invacom universal - single, twin or quad - LNB NOT quattro. The twins and quads tend to have better signal gain than the singles but I'm not sure how bad reception is where you are so I don't know what you should get. www.astra2d.com is a good site for information.

I have tried most LNBs on the market during the years and the Invacom is way overhyped for what it delivers, the same goes to Sharp dot4 which many people claims to be some wonder LNB.

The best performing LNBs today are the Smart Titanium 0.2 and the Inverto range of LNBs, also the Golden Interstar is very good.

Difference between Invacom and the Inverto is having a signal on BBC or not when using small dishes....

Out here in Cyprus the performance of LNBs are critical to signal quality because we are about as far out as you can economically go to get astra 2d. Any problematic equipement will show when trying to receive sky!

The Inverto has a pretty good reputation amongst the professional installers round these parts though I have not personally tried them yet. They still reckon the Invacom pips it though.
As for the Smart Titanium...I read about this LNB in another thread and was even going to get one off eBay, but then I chatted to a guy in Futuresat in Limassol about them. He showed me the one he had tried and was less than complemtary about its performance! I'm not saying it’s useless, I'm just saying it’s useless in Cyprus!

I should also add that I almost always use C120 LNBs as they are best for fringe reception. I don't have as much experience with universals. I know that Invacom performance drops away dramatically on offsets over 1.6m, but this guys dish is a 1.2!
