Just setting up 500s ,screen is black on some channels but showing what programs are showing on the skin! am I missing something??:confused

Dude, either you don't have the signal right on those channels or they're encrypted. One way to check that out:
Menu-settings-service searching-manual transponder scan
you need to get BLOCK and SYNC ticked. If they're both it means the signal is locked :)

I have moved your posts from encryptions forum to dreambox 500. If you posted in the correct section you stand a better chance of a quick reply. Unfortunately not every satellite enthusiast owns a DM or similar Linux based stb so you will just have to be patient or alternatively read the extensive information already posted.

Mike you dont seem to realise that a DB (or any other Linux receiver) is not a magic box that will automatically give you all the channels for free.

DB's are good but you still require a paid subscription for most pay channels. There are a handful of services still open but the glory days of having almost every major pay tv service available are LONG gone.
