Help! No Astra 19.2 signal being found by my new TNT SAT receiver

My Satellite Setup
freesat hd TNT Sat HD
My Location
N W England
I have an 80cm dish with a dual LNB pointing at Hotbird 13 and Astra 19.2 degrees. Both satellites are picked up with no problem on my Skyline DSR6000 satellite receiver.
However! I have just returned from France where I bought and used, with no problems, A Philips HD DSR5020 receiver with Viaccess 3.0 and TNT card. In setting this up in NW England I cannot pick up any 19.2 signal. I have removed cables from my Skyline box and connected the 19.2 cable directly into my Philips having checked it was the right cable.

Does anyone know what my problem might be?

Thanks

What do you mean by a "Dual LNB", exactly?

Is this a single headed twin output LNB or is it a Monoblock LNB?

Only a Monoblock can get 13E and 19.2E at the same time, but there would only be one cable as the Monoblock has integral DiSEqC switching.

Yet you refer to a "cable for 19.2E".

We need more information.

Thanks for quick reply. I am not an expert but I have 2 LNBs connected to my dish and 2 cables coming into the house. I connect these to an HI isolation cable switch with a short cable leading to my Skyline box.

Ok, I think I've got it.

Two separate LNBs, so two cables, and previously you selected which cable to feed to the Box using an A/B Isolation Switch.

There is an easier way, whereby you replace the A/B switch with a DiSEqC switch and set ports up in the Receiver menu - It then selects the correct LNB automatically.

However, you've got what you've got and I am assuming that you've detached the 19.2E cable from the A/B switch and are feeding it directly into the Philips Receiver with TNT Card.

As the cable worked before and the Philips worked before, then you've either connected the wrong cable and need to double double double check, or there is an incorrect setting in the Philips Receiver.

So, the only other thing we don't know is the system that the Philips was connected to while you were in France. That might yield further clues.

One last thought - has the connection been properly and securely made? ie Are you sure the inner cable core hasn't bent over and missed the socket, or even caused a short? If so, disconnect the cable, leave the box for a few minutes, reconnect and reboot.

I used the Philips receiver in Normandy and it was connected to a cable coming from a motorised Metronic? dish with it facing 19.2. The HD quality was fantastic.

Right. A motorised dish.

In that case, you need to delve into the Philips Menus and deselect whichever Motor drive system you had: Could be DiSEqC 1.2 or USALS/DiSEqC 1.3.

Then just make sure that DiSEqC is either "None" or "A" (which amounts to the same thing in your case).

The HD quality will once again be fantastic ..................

Could the problem be related to the restrictions on TNTSAT receivers?

I think the receivers cannot be used on any other satellite than Astra 19.2.

Also, just to clarify, is it a TNT card or a TNTSAT card?

Oh dear! I've not had any success. I changed the menu to "none" and tried the rescan but still no recognition. I also tried after resetting to factory settings. In the Philips handbook the technical sections has the following under LNB:-
Voltage 0,14,18V
Current 350mA maximum
Signal 22kHz
DiSEqC 1.0, Toneburst

Toneburst is included on the drop down menu where I I changed to no DiSEqC. I also tried the Toneburst option but to no avail. However during the scanning process I have noticed that around 75% completed I get 65% strength and 100% quality but only for about 2% and by 78% we are back to 0%/0% and no channels are picked up.

Sorry, missed replying . The card is a TNT SAt card with a 4 year life. Astra 19.2 is the only satellite the receiver can access.

LNB settings should be something like Universal, Universal 1, Universal 9750/10600: With that selected (they are essentially the same thing, identified slightly differently by different Receivers), the correct sub-settings will happen automatically.

Have you checked the integrity of the cable connection to the receiver?

Disconnect it, inspect the plug/cable to make sure that the inner core is not bent over, that there are no strands of the cable screen floating around where they shouldn't be and carefully reconnect taking care to make sure the inner core meets the hole in the socket and that you do it up finger tight.

Switch off the Philips before disconnecting and don't turn it back on again until you've inspected and reconnected.

And before you reconnect it to the Philips, please prove you've got the right cable by connecting it directly into your other Skyline Receiver and checking 19.2E works ok.

This is one of those issues that could probably be resolved in minutes "on site", but isn't that easy to sort out in words alone! :)

We have moved a tiny bit forward! I checked out 19.2 on my Skyline and all channels were there. I then followed your advice and reconnected to the Philips. As before the scan went to 76% and a good signal was found until 78% when it went blank again.
But! I now have 4 channels but not French -all Spanish:-
Andalucia TV
Canal Club
TV3 CAT
T Madrid SAT

I have been very remiss in not thanking you for staying with me all this time. I really appreciate your advice. Do you think I should get someone to run a new cable? I'll keep trying with my searching for new channels.

This is progress, as you say.

We now know for sure you have the right cable and it seems to be properly connected.

I'm not sure why you needed to scan at all if the same receiver had been in use in France - the stored Channel lists should have been fine.

How long has the Receiver been out of use? It is a fact that some older Receivers with degraded Power Supply Smoothing Capacitors can do odd things when brought back into use, although some "recover" to live a happy and fruitful second life. But I gather the Philips is "new"??

I haven't put my own finger on it just yet, but I would lay odds-on that this is "finger trouble".

May I suggest instead of doing a full scan, you scan a single Transponder, a Free To Air one in the first instance, for example 12226 H 27500 3/4, which has Austrian Channels plus Euronews, to see if those Channels do in fact come up.

If they do, we can then try a dedicated French package Transponder like 12522 V 22000 2/3 and see how that goes.

Also, in my ignorance of TNT Sat Card issues, I wonder if the out-of-use period has meant that the Card has missed some sort of maintenance signal?

BSkyB Cards are "refreshed" every now and again on air and if you leave a Sky Box out of use for a few weeks, it can take a little while before the Card is kick-started again.

Perhaps a TNT Sat savvy Forum Member could offer advice?

I did have loads of stored channels including all the French channels such as TF1 and F2/3 when I got home but having all this trouble I did a factory settings restore and lost all these. I will scan individual transponders and see what happens. Will let you know when this is done. Thanks again and I hope the snow has gone as it has here.

Well I regret to inform you that was the worst possible action you could have taken and does to some extent explain why you are experiencing problems, although you should have mentioned in post one

Yes, it might have helped a lot!

We could then have started with a logical sequence of setting up the LNB etc, but never mind, we'll plod on from where we are now.

Apologies for not mentioning what now appears to a major error. Is there anything I can do now?

Have you tried the scans suggested in post no 14 yet?
