help to change receiver software

Dear Friends
a very warm hello

i just want to know that can i install any software in my receiver present in the satellites.co.uk or there are some kind of ristriction because some one told me that i have to check my ic of receiver before changing the software. I am unable to contact my vendor kindly guide me with your advise.
