help with satlook combolook colour

hi guys,just wondering if theres any fellow installers out there with one of these meters that can help me with a quick question.

just got my combolook,bloody heavy but lets me watch the babestation when i'm up a triple so all good:cool:
done an aerial job today and could'nt get any picture on the meters screen even though the aerial was receiving the signal from the transmitter,i pressed picture and all i got was the snowing effect.
the screen works perfectly when doing satellite jobs so was only wondering if the combolook doesn't display the broadcast when doing an aerial job or have i been sold a duff meter?
 
Just looked at the spec from the combolook colour HD and it only mentions satellite digital and analogue pictures, not Terrestrial picture display, so I would guess that it isn't supposed to.

Is it an old Combolook or the new HD model? The old Combolook can decode and display DVB-S and PAL. It cannot decode DVB-S2 or DVB-T. The new HD model will decode PAL, DVB-S, DVB-S2, and DVB-T but cannot display MPEG4.

its the older combolook(even though it's only a weeks old)not the combolook hd,must be what heuvos said,just cant'figure out why the picture option is still on the lcd screen if it can't display the picture that's broadcast?perhaps there'll be an update for it soon where it'll make use of this feature?

I doubt it. The option is there because it will display the picture if it is PAL (analogue).

using the spectrum to find satellites is much easier than my old horizon meter,took a little while to get used to tho.
 
Not at all, these days the only time I look at a programme on the screen is when quickly locating 5West or Astra 1 to get my bearings (or to prove to the customer they really can get French TV with a dish in a particular position).
Even the tone is more useful than an analogue picture in most cases.

Picture display is pretty unimportant. It's not quite a circus trick, but almost.

Your meter will be useful as long as there are DVB-S transponders on all the satellites you want to receive, which should be a few more years at least.

What is missing though is DVB-T demodulation. The problem with using the spectrum and no digital demodulation for terrestrial is you will tend to try to line up on the strongest signal, rather than the closest. For example, round here there are a few high power main transmitters, as well as secondary low power transmitters to fill in the shadows. When you are in an area where you can receive both you need to line up on the closer (fill in) transmitter otherwise the "echo" from the main transmitter will be stronger than the lead signal causing poor signal quality even though signal level is adequate.

Personally, I've got the Emitor Digiair-Pro for terrestrial, which does have DVB-T demodulation. I got it because when I bought the Satlook Color HD I wanted the Combolook HD (which does have DVB-T demodulation) but it still wasn't available at the time, so I got the two separate units instead. This unit also would fill the gap missing from your meter.
 
i suppose it's not really that important getting a picture on the screen,but i'm massive worrier so it would put my mind at rest when i'm up on the roiftops lol

Well normally you would go on the digital info, but for terrestrial you don't have that or the picture so you're stuffed either way. Still an excellent meter for satellite work though.
