The BBC's HD programmes will be free to anyone who has the right equipment a mpeg4 dvb-s2 satellite receiver it would be illegal for the bbc to encrypt a service for the uk that tv licence payer are paying for

They will also be showing the world cup in hd
 
I got sky, but it's a bit useless BBC having HD which is free, even the world cup which will be on UKG2 coz you'll have to get the SKYHD box which I don't really want, and I don't know if they make you commit to their tenner a month hd channels...

Need a bloody dreambox that can do HD sharpish.
 
Why is it useless have bbc HD as that is where the HD world cup is on thats where i will be watching it in HD:) and its FTA

Yes there will be world cup on UKG2 but only in SD AS UKG2 is a SD channel as will not be in HD

Also if you did have a HD Dreambox and you still wanted the Sky HD channels you would still have to pay £10 on top of your current sub to get the HD channels, What is it you getting the £10 HD sub mixed up with the £10 fee for the sky plus part of the HD receiver if you dont take a premium channel E.G Movies or sport, And how do you know sky are not going to use a diffrent version of videoguard?

@yazooo,

Seems a bid odd to go out and get a different receiver when you could use a SKY HD box as a FTA receiver for the footy. If you still had no plans for SKY after that - you could get rid of it on Ebay:D

Just clear-up how the card/no card thing works (receiving FTA HD)with an installer. SKY's info on this is a bit misleading.

if you have a HD receiver plugged into a Non HD telly will your picture be HD
 
Ahh, I was sure I read somewhere that the HD broadcasts of the World cup were coming via UKG2. Well it doesn't make a huge amount of difference. I'll still need the SKY HD box. I'll just get a FTV card if needed (didn't know you could watch anything on a SKY box without any card), so I can keep my other card in my dreamboxes (reason for that). Hopefully Sky will sell the box without the hd subscription, or maybe some resellers will get hold of them.

nope it wont. a non hd telly simply wont have the capapbility of displaying a high resolution which is hdtv.

Slightly OT but I found this gem:

And UKTV G2 has sub-licensed coverage from BBC/ITV.

..but will UKTV finally start broadcasting in widescreen in time for this? I doubt it, but I would love it if I was proved wrong.

i have invested in a upscaler that takes all my scart inputs and svideo and upscales them and output them in hd dvdo its called so i can watch everything now but upscaled to a sharper pic exellent bit of kit;)
 
1) There are non SKy sat receivers which will get FTA (also CAM encrypted) non SKy HD broadcasts, but they're expensive.

2) HD receivers will output to standard tellys, but that's a bit pointless!
 
having looked at the other hd receivers, they all seem to be in the price range of the sky one, and considering it has a hdd, and will be compatible in case i want to go for the hd sub as well, might be the one to go for!

Indeed: with HD isn't the point to blow the bloody doors off!

From that SKY installer/training thing that's doing the rounds - AFAI could gather SKY will only be supplying an HDMI lead; so, you shouldn't really have any probs connecting anything other than HD:D

hello,

does anyone know where I can buy a sky HD and put it in myself.........everywhere i've enquired will only sell you one if they install it.......i.e. comet etc. Ithink there is a waiting list even for this and I've also heard that thomson have recalled their HD receivers due to problems. Anyone else heard this ?
 
Don't think that it is possible to buy one elsewhere and won't be until Sky have got rid of the backlog.
 
New Launch + Backlog = lack of stock. I doubt its because the installer's are working slow?

If its the football that's causing this necessary angst - there are other HD Set-Top Boxes out there. The Humax PR-HD1000 is just one .-) It has the styling of a 2CV; but is probably cheaper than an air-ticket. Saw this STB for €320.00 the other day.
