Home Setup with sky...

To be blunt, (but no disrespect meant) you dont want a Dreambox or Linux receiver until you have more knowledge of the hobby. They are complicated receivers to get the best out of.

If you want one then you have to be prepared for days if not weeks of head scratching, disappointment, and sheer misery if you want to get anywhere near the best out of them. We will give you some advice but dont expect a step by step guide, as we dont hold anyones hand with DB's. If you want to get to know how they work under the bonnet then you have to go through all the pain the rest of us did.

:D

non taken! im sure i can figure it all out eventually haha whats the difficult part though? is it the flashing of images as a lot of places are offering to pre load gemini or images of your choice

As Admin said its not just putting an image on, although its a start and it will work, but their is a lot you can do with a linux box recording /networking etc tms can be had for around £70.00 around manchester, read the forum and it will give you all the info you need.

We discourage folks with the horror stories as too many folks get they idea they are easy to set up and get the advanced functions working correctly.

A year or so back we had a bloke almost in tears virtually begging for someone to go round and set his two boxes up as he had just bought them, couldnt figure them out and his kids were "screaming at him" so they could watch their telly..!

Dont get me wrong - I think all of us DB owners get great satisfaction from owning & using them, BUT Im sure all of us had the "Im about to throw this heap of junk out of the window" moments.

The best way to own one is to have it running in parallel to another receiver to begin with. That way theres no pressure to get it up and running, and if it defeats you one evening you can put it aside, go and watch some tv and come back a few nights later when you are ready to do battle again :)

Initially I was planning on keeping sky hd for the meanwhile until I got it set up and got a good understanding. I've read through some of the guides and it seemed as if the flashing of the image seemed to be the hardest bit hence why I asked. I'm a student so iv got plenty of time to pit it frankly but I also have connections who an set up the sat etc it's just me initially who'll be funding it until it's all set up. Iv got experience when it comes to computers granted not in this field but I'm sure I can pick it up faster than most ;-)

Can pick up a cloned dm for around the 40 quid Mark with a pre loaded image so may follow that route however the satellite on the back of the house has just thrown a bit of doubt on a worrying mother

Have a look through the members pictures section:
Picture of Members' Setups and general satellite installations

Have a scroll through the section and look at a number of the threads they might give you a few ideas.

Dish design has come a long way since the early days and some 85cm dishes are light and not to bad to look at, take a look at the Penta, although you might want to get a 1M dish installed for some of the weaker satellites.

If you have a garden you can mount the dish down the bottom of the garden and screen it to some degree with low growing shrubs. It doesnt need to be high up - goround level is fine as long as it has clear line of sight to your desired satellite. (Easier to asjust as well - no need to run up & down ladders!)

Due to nearby trees we cant have a satellite dish on the house so our Sky dish is mounted on a fence post down the garden - along with my motley collection of other dishes for he European satellites :D

It wouldn't be a problem mounting on house if it were on the back but it's snap bang on the front! I like the idea of having it in the garden though!
Will a clone be ok?
What other things willi need to buy except the dish and lnb?
And if I do mount in the garden is it still possible to get it motorised?

DiSEqC motor, ground mount, cable.

If you have line of sight (view of the satellites) from ground level then it's possible.

Before you stick a motorised in your back garden work out where you have most satellite visibility (chances are at some stage you'll want to see a sat that's just out of reach). It might be worth sticking the motorised on the front of the house and the sly dish at the back.

Will thin cloth netting or chicken wire affect signal?

Just been offered 145 brand new clone with bootloader 76, Gemini image 5.0, sim 2.01 with the ALPS tuner L3 version. Is this worth purchasing?

That will be an 800 then, seems a good price for the latest clone, though the quality of them seems to range from very good to absolute s--t. Just depends which chineese factory it comes out of. These are enigma 2 boxes and require specially patched images unlike enigma 1 boxes(500/600 ) which will run all standard images except Gemini which needs to be patched.

According to what the guy was saying, these '2.01' sims can install any firmware, patched or not patched. People have said his boxes are quality because of the latest tuner and this sim but I know nothing lol
