Hello,

I am new here and am not too good with satellites . I've just moved in to a new flat and I wanted to install a dish which can receive Hotbird, I've called a fitter last night and he told me that because my balcony is facing the south west , and on the other side the north and east I can't install it. Are there any other solutions for that or should I try and let someone visit and try?

You need a view out between south and south east. If you dont have a clear line of sight in that direction dont bother as you will never get the signals you want

Have a play with Dishpointer (Via linkie at top of page) ................. not sure how much it will help, but it might.

Having a balcony on a SW facing wall does not necessarily preclude the reception of Hotbird, so yes, dishpointer could be of some use.

As the above Admin + Mods said, have a look at dishpointer and see if you can or think you can and send me a message, maybe when im passing in manchester i can call round and have a look for you,

You will have to ask Admin for PM privelage.

Thx for the help guys, however am struggling to with the dishpointer. I can't understand is it a program or is it the small device? Another thing to mention is am at the top floor so my balcony has like 2.5 meters wall above it, if that can help me find a signal.

Dead easy to use. Just find your location, select Hotbird 13E and it will give you an idea of whats possible

Just tried it, O-no the direction is against 2.5 m long wall. I guess I cant have one then, are there any other solutions to get hotbird? PC, Internet or anything?

Some channels are streamed on the internet. What in particular are you looking to get.

Also remember that dishpointer is only a guide - if you are willing to pay a call out fee (knowing there is a possibility of failure) then get a local installer to come out and have a look and do some measurements.

Dishpointer can be wrong on tall tower blocks, due to the angle the google photo is taken at sometimes.

I think am gonna find a local installer then. I was looking for some Arabic channels. As Robbo mentioned it's a pretty tall building so I will have a hope that the pointer gone wrong or something and see what the local installer say.

Cheers guys for the help.

You are looking for 13E, 13E is 13 Degrees East of South.

Stand on the Balcony and decide where South is, then look for Sky dishes, they are pointing to 28E.

If you can point your Arm mid-way between South and where the Sky Dishes are pointing you will get 13E.

Point your Arm to South, Point your Arm to where the Sky Dishes are pointing, mid-way-ish is where 13E will be.

And dont forget you could hang a Dish on the Front of the Balcony, and make it look back towards 13E, all sounds good fun to me

Hmm. Trueish, but the required azimuth depends upon other things, such as the lat/long of the punter, and taking into account all sorts of geomagnetic and other anomalies!

But Dishpointer and other similar tools (Satsig etc) will tell you the actual compass bearing you need.

In the meantime there are plenty of Arabaic channels streaming on the internet.

well, I can put my arm but it is facing a wall is it still ok?

Depends how close the wall is and how high it is.

The dish is "looking" upwards at around 25 degrees.

hmm, if it is around 25 degrees upwards then maybe around 1.5m from the wall :\ not promising at all ?
