Not sure about playing with the Humax, but if you wait for a while,. one of the other Humax owners will see the thread. :)

I will change the title to better reflect the question.

good evening rolfw,
hi hamdaw,

well lets try to sort you out, first off you do not want a serial lead, but do not chuck it, it will come in handy for an extension, what you need is a nullmodem lead, i prefer to suggest that you buy one from a store as this has a full wired lead, then you will need the programs

HDFSMART, (this is for loading firmware updates, and if you have a patched unit, patches)

HNFSMART (this is used for loading channel settings)

both programs can be found if you google for humaxsmartsuite

hope this helps
voith

arghhh, forgot to ask, can you confirm that you only have the 5400z and not the 5400z+ (plus)

The Humax 5400s use a null modem lead, a crossover, not serial.

Additionally a lot of 5400Zs had the patching circuitry removed (or disconnected) on the motherboard. If you bought it under the understanding it could be upgraded, check the receipt.

hi hamdaw,
the fact that you are refering to it as a serial cable is the answer, but i have googled and not being a techie it does look like a bogstandard serial lead.

a null modem lead,( this is what you ask for in the shop) has a few leads crossed over.

hi hamdaw,
if you have purchased this lead and it was labled a serial lead then it is not the correct one, the null modem lead looks exactly the same but is wired differently, if you have a multimeter you can check the pin out
you will find
pins
2x3
3x2
5x5
will be connected

as for the state of your patch,
go
menu
installation
and at the bottom of the screen will be a banner proclaiming the ToH as

+CAM TuningsOnHumax 3.4

then go to
menu
toh
HoT
and a scroll will give you the whole shooting match

+CAM TuningsOnHumax 3.4 HoT 7.6 version B

this being the latest

hope this helps

Note, the above type of null modem - lead pins 2/3 - will hopefully work, but depends on xon/xoff for data flow control, otherwise it's the "more complete" null modem cable (with additional "crossed over" wires ......).

hi spiney,
this is true, i always advocate a shop bought nullmodem lead, because the hand made ones sometimes give problems with dsr9500, however, the pinout i have shown above is the official basic humax connection for software updates, so i only highlighted those, if these were found in a shop bought one, then there would be a good chance it was a true nullmodem lead.
best regards
phil
