How does one disengage a motor ?

I am having major problems installing my motorised dish system with the following Hw :-

-1 metre dish
-Silent Gold 99 ( I think by Jaegar) with an H-H mount.
On the actual motor it says 36v DC, Reed sensor , Adj E/W limits.

Initially I want to be able to move the actuator manually rather than use the motor via the receiver and according to an article (in WhatSat June 2004) I was reading it is possible to disengage the motor and turn the dish by hand.

Does anyone know how to do this for the above hardware??

Some H-H Jaegars have a taper pin through the motor spigot.

Take the taper pin out and the dish can move anywhere.

I had a look at the mount and I cannot see any sort of pin that one could take out.

Question: Will one have to tke off the Motor housing ( plastic) to get at this pin??

Also I have tried searching the web for technical details on the Silent Gold 99 hardware without sucess. Does anyone know where I can find a spec on this product??

Check under the plastic collar.

This pic is of my Metronic Diseqc motor with the collar raise to reveal the two fixing bolts. It's a different motor but the mechanics appear to be identical to the SG99.

Jaegar web site is http://www.jaeger.com.tw/tvro/geotrack/images/sg99_geotrack.jpg

They don't list the Silent Gold 99, I assume it has been superseded. Not much information there I'm afraid.

The information from altis should help you better.

altis,
Thanks for your suggestion. I had a look today but the there is no large plastic collar apart from a black ring with a pointer and I only remember seeing 1 fixing bolt! - I'll double check tommorrow.
Would I be correct in assuming that the pointer indicates the azimuth angle of the dish as the H-H housing has a scale of -90-0-+90???

Would seem logical since an H-H mounting has 180 degree travel (or vision) therefore assuming East - West is set correctly then I would say yes but I have got be honest I use a polar mount.

Indeedy. You can probably make out the marks I've put on for Thor (T), Hotbird (H) etc.

There's no pointer on my plastic collar - but there is a little notch on the spigot that sticks up out of the housing. It may be a little difficult to make out from the picture but, on mine, the spigot and the bent pipe (upon which the dish mounts) are separate. They are locked together with the two bolts. If I take out the bolts then the bent pipe (and the dish) will swivel round. But watch out 'cos the dish is a long way from the axis and it flops down heavily on either side.

hello jayedin,
have fitted a few jaeger 99 motors for
myself and friends.
first one i did, tried to get the tapered pin out
as per instructions,it was in so tight i snapped the
head off the tapered bolt, still in there after 12 months.
i set the first one up with a 12 v battery connected
to the 2 terminals marked motor A+B on the motor,
after i managed to track the arc,i connected the
motor wires to the receiver, set the east/west limits,
then put the positions in for the sats.
theres a small V-shape notch on the spigot, alighn this
up first with the 0 degrees on your east/west scale on
your mount.with a compass alighn the 0 degree marker
to as close to south as you can get it,then mount your
dish so the north/south axis
on your mount is perpendicular to your dish.
good luck.

Hello jacko,
I took the plastic collar off and there was a bolt with an allen key head.
I had a go at unscrewing it but it turned out to be extremely difficult that I gave up half way through.
So I went back to driving it from the Receiver.
I tried using a compass to align the pole mounting bracket to true South but the impact of the metalwork is too much - so I don't know how to overcome this ( apart from say fixing a string from the wall to a few metres out and align the string to South standing well away from the Antenna).
I have to admit I'm close to calling in the so called professionals as I've spent a lot of time over the past 2.5 months in reinstating and converting from analog to digital a motorised system which had to be taken down a few years back for a building extension.

hello,
first with your receiver line the v-notch on the spigot up with
the 0 marker on your east/west gauge.
if you stand in front of your mount.the east to west
indicator is in front of you.if you can hold your compass
about 2 inches on top of the east/west gauge.imagine a straight
line going through you and the 0 pointer on your gauge, this
is your north/south axis. line your compass up so that the needle
is pointing south along this imaginary line.if not rotate the
mount by hand to line it up.then put the bent extension pole
on the spigot shaft.this bent pole now appears straight when looking
at it along the n/s axis line.
don¨t give up,i took ages on my first one.

Jacko ,
Thanks for your ideas.
Your method of using a 12v supply to drive the motor independently of the Receiver is very interesting approach. Part of my problems is that I am battling to use the Receiver to drive the Positioner - still thats another ongoing saga with the manufacturer to resolve the problems.

So IF I can drive the motor from a Power supply unit and use the Receiver as a signal meter for a satellite then great.
Q: Is there any reason why you choose 12v and not a higher voltage closer to the 36v that the motor is normally driven by??

Use of Compass issues:-
I found that whenever I use the compass anywhere near the Antenna dish the North indication is vastly different than from another location. I interpreted your posting as suggesting that the dish be removed prior to aligning the mount. Is that correct??

A idea I had was to try using a vertical wooden batten taped to the pole mount and fix the compass at the base of the batten well away from the metal dish.

So if the weather is good at the weekend I will persevere.

This is a long shot m8, Lothian is at 3* west, the sun is due south at 12 minutes past noon BST at that location.
That's what I meant by long shot, pray for a sunny weekend.
Best of luck H-B.
PS. Perhaps 12v was suggested as it is readily available from small PSU's or even a car battery. But I do not know if 12v would run a 36v motor!

jayedin,
you have to align your mount first,
thats the 0 marker pointing true south.
i used the compass 2 or more inches higher,
because if i had the compass directly on the
mount,i got a false reading.
once your mount is pointing true south you
can drive the spigot on your motor so the
notch in the spigot lines up with the 0 marker.
you can then put the ¨bent¨dish support arm on.
then you put your dish on so that it is at 90 degrees
to your n/s axis line.
i used a 12v car battery because the motor draws about
5 amps, the battery does the job perfectly, the motor
moves just a bit slower,
once you¨ve moved the motor in one direction,
obviously you have to swap the leads on the battery
to change directions,
hope this helps.
