Hello.

I have SG-2080 motor, according to manual, it can take dishes up to 1.2m. I want to equip it with 1.5m fortec star dish. Motor will be moved very rarely, say, 2-3 times per week. Will it last for year at least?

That depends: How sheltered is the site?

I had a 1.1m Dish on a 1.2m specified H-H Motor and had to relocate it pronto from a house wall to a ground mount in a sheltered spot because I was not at all happy with it in even moderate winds. Wind loading affects the motor even when not in use, of course.

Also, the specified size limitation on the motor needs to be tempered with consideration of the weight of the particular Dish.

Yes,depends on the weight.

I had a Triax TD110 on a small Stab for 90cm dishes, it worked well for almost 2 years.

But then I put a 90cm Fibo on it, and it sh&gged it.:-rofl2
(fibo very heavy)

Don't know what the FS 1.5m is like, but their 90cm is very flimsy and light.

The 1.5m fortecstar is quite heavy, but more important is the surface area and the way the dish will swing when moving, it is just as likely to strip or jam the gearing.

1.5m dish has got 56% more surface area than a 1.2m. Also a 1.5m dish need a 3" fixing or the wind will just turn it.

I don't know exact weight, but I can lift that dish with one hand without any problems, maybe around 10-15 kg?

This dish will be used for DXing, stable reception is not required, so wind instability can be ommited.

I've got a donkey. His old owner says he can carry 150 kilos of firewood but I want him to carry 250 kilos. How long do you think it will be before he dies of exhaustion? By the way he doesn't need to be reliable because I'm only going to make him do it 2 or 3 times a week.

Obviously, if the motor is 'dispensable' like my stab was, you could try it just for the hell of it. It was quite interesting hearing my motor tearing itself to death, the noise woke all the neighbours up.:-rofl2

Wouldn't put a donkey through that though.;)

it has nothing to do with wind stability the problem that everyone is trying to alert you to is the reverse loading on the gears caused by the large surface area of the dish , this is multiplied in the same way as servo on a braking system works. A large area receiving a large force will equate to a small area as in the gearing receiving a massive force, in the same way as a stiletto heel on a dainty woman will make puncture marks in a floor covering.

It would be foolish to say the least to attempt this.

Yes, this motor is "disposable", I'm not aware what going to happen to it, just I'd like to estimate how long it will last with such load, day, hour, 5 minutes, 4 months or century? :)

Have a back up motor or two standing by. Not something I'd attempt :)

Bombed One, 1.5m fortec star dish,is a offset dish??

Or am I wrong?
If it is a offset go for an offset polar mount .I think I still have one in the cellar .I used it 5 years with a 100cm very good noname dish and got 42east-30west with a 12" actuator.

Pictures of polar mount for offset tomorrow:)

Hello Doctor :)

The dish is offset one.

There's one HUGE difference between me and you. You already have polar mount, while me - not. And I'm not planning to invest money in it, just trying to re-use existing stock of "expensive junk" (as my wife calls them) as much as I can.
