freecycle.org

i recently joined my local freecycle group.

its a play on the words "free" and "recycle". it works like this - you've got something you don't want, you can't be bothered to sell it on eBay cause it ain't worth much and you can't be bothered with all the associated hassle of collecting payment & postage etc. also you're slightly environmentally minded and you'd rather not put your junk into landfill. so you advertise it on freecycle.

people give away all sorts of stuff. i gave away some SIM cards i never used. someone gave away a 21" TV with remote the other day. i responded to an offer for some "old sky" equipment yesterday - I ended up collecting a Pace MSS100 (Analogue) and Philips DTX DVB terrestial receiver - minus remotes, but free all the same. do they work? dunno - that's part of the fun. someone was giving away a sky digibox the other day. it went in a flash, i mised out, but it probably won't be long before another crops up. i fancy a digibox to play with but really don't need one, so i'll wait.

go on, sign up today, give away your junk, and collect more!

Sounds like a good idea, just a shame that it is via Yahoo Groups, I had bad experiences with spam when I joined one of the groups before and don't like the format particularly.

Humax and Echostar receivers, Dragon, two dishes, one fixed 100cm dish pointing at Hotbird, and a 90cm motorised dish; plus a rubbish DVD recorder and cool DVD players, and lots of cables!! Oh, yeah, and a video recorder - best invention yet!!
Closetosoton, that sounds a great site. But I don't think there's any demand for D2-mac decoders, or analogue systems, which I have stacked in my loft.

Maybe I will donate them to British Heritage in a few years time. Or maybe they'll be ripe for the Antique's Roadshow in 10 years...

You would probably be surprised at the demand for analogue kit. Whilst its not worth much more than the p&p these days, decent ones are still in demand for beginners to the hobby to play with.

i agree with analoguesat, i'm sure there are quite a few german/french speakers scattered around the UK who'd appreciate your old analogue kit.

Joined the London freecycle briefly yesterday for about 3 or 4 hours, and got
133 emails  when I checked my box. Luckily I gave them my slush hotmail acc but you can see the potential.

filter them for the key words like satellite - i picked up a dish yesterday, will be fun to find out what it is - 80cm analgue or zone 1 sly dish i reckon... that's 7 dishes i have now and counting. these motor things are overrated.

nope, you just join, give stuff away, and claim stuff that people are giving away. or you can put a request in for stuff. its mostly furniture and junk, but the odd peice of modern technology shoes up, someone gave away a dvd player the other day. i missed out on an arcam analogue tv tuner too...

use a hotmail account or somehting....
