I have a new 80cm steel dish that was slightly scratched while it was in storage. Now I'm seeing some signs of rust on the scratches. What would be the best way to prevent the rust from spreading and getting worse? Touch it up with some same-color paint? (if yes, what type?) Or coat it with some kind of clear-coat protectant? :confused:

Clean it well and paint the scratches, should be fine.

White spirit or turpentine.

Ah, ok, thanks. And any specific type of paint? Regular oil-based paint?

I got some of this stuff in a local hardware store:

_http://www.motipdupli.de/index.php?id=tm_1118&L=2

It says
[h=1]Quality and properties[/h]

  • Quick, simple and safe application
  • Hardens and isolates rusted surfaces
  • Prevents further corrosion of the treated parts
  • Surface remains slightly sticky

I guess this should do it? It also suggests following it with some primer, and then painting, but my scratches are small and I'm not bothering to paint it, so then no need for primer, right?

That looks good .............. And if it does eventually wash/erode away, the bottle is big enough to give you plenty of goes at repeating the application.

Probably much less overall effort than priming and painting.

I use a product called Kurust on parts that are not prominent - it turns rust a purple/black colour so is not good to look at!
