how to test reed switch on 36v motor

my 1224 seems to have gone down tonight and my positioner is showing the e2 error message. i've reset the positioner which hasn't fixed the issue.

i've been outside just now and had a look at the motor connections and all seems well there so I'm guessing its a reed switch problem

is there anyway to test this to make sure it is fine and to rule the positioner as the problem.
 
Two ways: if you have a 36v source, then take the two wires which go to the sensor and connect them to a multimeter. Apply the 36v across the motor wires to move the dish, and check that the multimeter registers an opening and closing circuit.

Alt. remove the sensor from the mount, connect a multimeter, and bring a magnet close to the sensor, and then remove again - as you do so, you should see the multimeter registering an open/closed ciruit.
 
If it's the sensor, might be worth getting a couple Wod. Always worth keeping a few on the shelf.
 
guess what it is now working all I did was disconnect the motor wires from the vbox and reset the vbox. I then reseated the wiring into the vbox and it started to work again.

I did this last night which did not work.

I checked the reed switch and it didn't look worn or anything, its the wheel thing part on the left hand side of the motor just up from the power cable wiring ?

the vbox is a jaeger superjack 2 vbox which I think I will replace with something else, any recommended ?
 
The 'wheel' is the magnet. The reed switch is the plastic unit that sits beside the magnet. It's not possible to tell whether a reed switch is working or not by looking at it.
 
The easiest way to determine if the reed is knackered is to put a meter across the wires. It's normally open in use but closes when the magnet passes over it. Point to note is that the ferrite disc inside is not completely magnetic but has four magnetic points. And it's this opening and closing of the reed when they pass over it that the receiver detects. They do pack up but they're only about a £5 to replace.
