This document is now incorporated into the Dreambox Idiot Guide sticky.
Version number updated to V1.0 Final, but no changes made from V0.2 Draft.

It's a bit more than an idiot guide now. Updated for NewcamD version 5.25. New newcamd.conf section. Some errors fixed.

Please provide feedback via the main Dreambox forum. I'd still like the 'unknowns' at the back of the guide answered if anyone knows. It annoys me greatly to not be able to have it 100% right!

Closing this thread for now.

Way to go Stick! :-righton
I have had a quick look (at work), and it looks good. I might have one or two things I can answer, but maybe it will only be tonight!

I'm afraid I don't know your particular FTP client, but you simply need to FTP a NEW keylist and rsakeylist file to the /scce directory, and chmod them to 755.

You will need to read the doco that comes with your client.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have tried various FTP clients including FlashFXP, Smart FTP they all connect to the dreambox fine, even the llama ware dream box edit program seems to work fine. We can view the files but we cannot seem to write any new files into the various folders.

Wondering if there is any kind of write protection on the dreambox that must be overcome. I have a friend here too who is supposed to be a sat expert (!) but even he is stuck with this problem. We are using the RU-Dream Enigma image, latest version.

can anyone please help!!

I might be wrong, but I once had a situation where my dreambox was just too full and it did not want to have anything else. So I went and deleted a few programs from the plugins directory such as games and some other stuff. After that it worked...

thanks but still cannot write to the folders, tried deleting some files, it worked , seems strange that you can delete files but cannot add new files.

thank you

Delete a few more, and then reboot. All should be fixed.

There are no permissions needed to write to DB by ftp.
You should be able to write or re-write.
A simple way is just to use your web browser e.g. IE
type ftp://192.168.0.24
or whatever you have set DB to.
You will see the files and you should be able to delete/rewrite.
Except from a Mac, where ftp writing from Safari and IE is disabled.
I use Transport from Mac.

New meaning of the word idiot!
Looks v good and is already printed and filed in my work folder.

The comment re WordPad vs Notepad has wider issues. Essentially a Unix compatible windows editor is needed. There are things like Notepad2 that are supposed to work.

The times I have d/loaded a rsakelist file on its own, I didnt need to chmod it to 755, may have been done already.

But well done.
It will be appreciated by many.

its a shame I think my dream box is somehow write protected, I have tried writing, to it I can't or should I change the port on my dreambox from port 80 to port 21 as it is on my ftp client?

Hi,

Followed all the steps of the HowTo. I reckon you can't have too many Idiots Guides, it's the only way of some of us can learn about this stuff.

The only bit I found confusing was step 6:

6) Transfer the files

  • cardserv.cfg
  • cardspider.cfg
from the relevant subdirectories in the downloaded package to /var/tuxbox/config. Check that file newcamd.conf is also present here, and modify/update all three files as appropriate.

I transferred the files OK and I have got a newcamd.conf, but am not sure about the modify and update. Using the latest keylist and rsakeylist it is still all black on Thor.

If your newcamd.conf file worked before, it should work with 5.24.

I haven't checked this afternoon, but I believe that there was a key change on 1W today.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll include a sub-how-to for the newcamd.conf file. :)

The other two .cfg files will only need modifying if you're going to card share.

Once you're ready put the relevant text into the Idiot guide. I already officially included you as a Idiot Contributer, so...

I thought it was FOR idiots, not BY them!

I want to sort out my queries first, and include a guide on newcamd.conf. :D

In a couple of weeks I'm going to have a go at a new newcamd install.

The week after that I'll be mainly looking at SCAM.

Nope, things are not the way they seem O-Ha . it is recreational writing therapy with positons for about 3 Idiots and a nerd available(if someone reads this and feels spoken to please apply for idiot status )
