I don't seem to be able to update the software on the box. I have downloaded the latest files, but when i come to update the box via the COM port it just keeps saying waiting for download is there anything i can check ?.

I have tried various serial cables and a number of pcs already

When you start the download from your PC, the STB should be turned off at the switch at the back.

You then turn the box on again once the software is running and shows the pop up screen which you have described.

If this does not work, then you should check that you have the correct cable, some of the Humax Boxes need a 'straight' point to piont cable, others need a Crossover Cable.

There are two types of the older Humax receivers, called Superset and non Superset, and depending on the version (from the numbers on the back if the box) you have to get the right firmware from the Humax site.
