My present TV is an old Toshiba.
The sound is awful, an echo, or like someone in a tunnel.
I will buy a new LGOLED42C24.
I will get it installed by a Tech firm. I am the worlds worst dummy in anything technical.
My question to you will I need to buy a sound bar to get a decent sound?
Thanks for advice.

I would get a matching sound bar, (if you don't have an existing 5.1 surround sound stereo system) it will make a big difference.

LG has several options for a sound bar system, one is just a single sound bar, the other is a full sound system, the full system is a 5.1 system, this is the center channel sound bar and 4 other speakers (left, right, left rear, right rear) plus a sub woofer, this is more costly the just the single bar.

Try it first (if mounting on a wall make sure you select the correct audio settings). You could also connect to a hifi system with aux input in the meantime before committing.

My old 40" TV was also lacking in sound, so I installed a pair of much better elliptics from a scrap TV inside, never looked back.

Yes this one:
VULKKANO A5 ARC
Active Speaker with 5.25 Inch Woofer,
Bluetooth 5.0, HDMI ARC, Optica, RCA, USB
2x50W RMS

lesdeux.JPG

from here

It works better than a sound bar.
The small speakers are taken out of a sound bar (for size comparison only).
The TV is only 3 cm thick.

I am obviously 'out of my depth' here, but at 84year old I guess I have an excuse.

I bought an LG 48CX OLED a couple of years back and everyone said I need to buy a soundbar or a 5.1 to get decent sound out of it.

The tv arrived, I set it up, and honestly the sound on it is great, far better than the Samsung JS9000 that I replaced. It might help that I have the tv in the corner of the room and on a wooden unit, so the sound can bounce off 2 walls.

So I would wait and see what you think of the sound before you rush out and buy a soundbar or 5.1 / 7.1 system.

Regardless of whether you get a full "sound system", a soundbar or just a set of speakers (like that of LeBelge), I would strongly suggest getting at least a largish "centre" speaker as our experience here (as with others with similar systems) is that that's where the biggest improvement will come because much of the dialogue is "centre stage".

FWIW, I've got a Tannoy 5.1 system with a largish Signature centre, and the latter made a huge improvement when it replaced a much smaller Tannoy centre that should theoretically have been a match for the rest of the speakers - BTW: the system here is a Denon AVR-X2500H AVR 5.1 system with bi-amped Tannoy DC6T Fronts, DC4 Rears, DC6LR Signature Centre, and BK XLS-200 DF MK2 sub (which I rarely switch on), and the TV is 3 yr old LG 43" set (with a typically AWFUL r/c) that is actually not too bad soundwise when used on its own!

NB: You will find a lot of useful TV & AV-relevant info on the UK AVForums site, which was where I found out what would be good for us!

Now you've let the cat out the bag, is there a hearing deficiency that may have prevented you getting the best out of the previous setup ?

To be "blunt" old Toshiba sets (& we had 3 - 32", 40" and then 42" - in a row over about 10-12 years) never had good sound, especially compared to the current 42" LG without the AV system switched ON, and that was part of the reason I installed that system.

OTOH, you are probably correct about age-related hearing loss being a big factor in the OP's issues - because we're a big younger but we certainly have the same issue!

Well it's true, I do need to turn the sound up a little higher that one would count as normal.
But I can still hear the difference between an awful and a 'normal' sound Gott sei Dank.

You can get a free audiogram (hearing test) at some opticians.
At the age of 84 you have to compensate sound losses with the equalizer of your new TV set.

Taking into account what I wrote in post #9 about our LG set, I'm now thinking that it may be a good idea to wait until your new LG TV has been installed, and you can hear what it actually sounds like, before making any decision as to what extra kit/speakers would be appropriate.

Also, depending on where you live, your doctor may be able to refer you to an appropriate hospital service to have a hearing test done.

TBH, I don't understand what you are trying to say/imply in post #14 - all you were doing was linking to the first post in this thread, and that added nothing to the discussion:rolleyes:

So, what are you trying to say/imply?

Sorry and all that for mixing things up.

As I have stated before, I just needed a little information before I buy a new TV.
You have given me the info I need, so before I go I would like to thank you all.

A long time ago I heard something which you may or may not feel as you go into advanced age.

'' I knew growing old was bad, but I did not know it was THIS bad.''

This was said as a joke.

I hope when I pop off, someone ships me back to Berlin.

Auf Wiedersehen.

Gus
