Ive recently had a stroke, soI am off work with plenty of time on my hands.

I have an old astra 19.2, hotbird system I have decided to reactivate, which is hooked up to an old echostar 2110 ci viaccess reciever , okay here comes the problem. How do I get the updated software from the pc to the receiver.

I understand there is a serial port on the back of the receiver, but cant find one on the pc , unless the monitor port doubles as this also, although I have noticed you can buy serial port to usb cables, which sound a lot easier, but would these work.

Any help gratefully received

Kind Regards
Ian

Hi Ian, sorry to hear about your stroke.

Unfortunately serial port transfer is the only way you can update your software, over-the-air updating from Echostar used to be possible but not now.

Many PC motherboards have a serial port header to connect to an RS232 backplate on a PC, possibly you have one.

Not sure about Serial port to USB, may be OK.

Modern computers dont have serial ports - its outdated technology.

USB - serial adaptors sometimes work, sometimes they dont - you would need to buy one and try it.

Best of luck with your recovery - I had a small stroke in Sept 2004 and it was one of the most frightening things that has every happened to me.

Gigabyte still do serial and parallel connectors on their mobos, I bought a new one quite recently with them on. My last Gigabyte had the serial header, and the optional RS232 backplate (thank goodness, a much needed item for my STB's :)

Excuse my ignorance Llew, so the port that the monitor connects to on the back of the pc is not a serial port then.

No, it's only for your monitor, nothing to do with serial output(RS232).

Cheers Llew that clears a lot up, luckily I think there is a serial port on my old pc, if the usb conversion one doesnt work.
