Germany's BSI federal cybersecurity agency has warned the country's citizens not to install Russian-owned Kaspersky antivirus, saying it has "doubts about the reliability of the manufacturer."

Russia-based Kaspersky has long been a target of suspicious rumors in the West over its ownership and allegiance to Russia's rulers.

In an advisory published today, the agency said: "The BSI recommends replacing applications from Kaspersky's virus protection software portfolio with alternative products."

It added: "A Russian IT manufacturer can carry out offensive operations itself, be forced to attack target systems against its will, or be spied on without its knowledge as a victim of a cyber operation, or be misused as a tool for attacks against its own customers."

Ditched Kaspersky in 2018 for roughly those reasons -then again, now using Norton which, ISTR, is now owned by a Chinese company. :-doh

Also, in Issue 627 of Computer Active mag there's an article on a similar vein about Kaspersky and how the CEO hasn't actually condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and why the mag has dropped their s/w from their Recommended list of A/V Apps

It's worse than that :-wow

Symantec, never knowingly found any proper virus, but happy to charge for the priviledge of slowing down your appliance.

i recently dumped Kaspersky for Norton due to the invasion of Ukraine - however, Norton keeps killing my MACs internet - randomly (at random times) - i have to turn all the features off, then reboot to get internet back! great!

luckily - i didnt spend much, got one of those amazon deals 19.99 for 10 devices, for 15 months.

still - not worth it if its giving me this grief, Kaspersky had a great feature set in comparison

having said that Norton 360 is fine on all my PC devices and Android.

From the comments on the link I posted Acronis also has to be considered suspect as it has Russian owners........

Microsoft defender firewall provide enough protection and it’s free built in feature of the windows.
I never used any third party rubbish even for free.

I use Microsoft integral and Malwarebytes, have tried most of the other resource stealers including the KGB version and ditched all of them.

Never used Acronis A/V but did use their backup s/w for a couple of years, but then ditched it because it is "complicated", never worked properly on at least one of my PCs, and you lose access to the backups if you don't renew - would probably now have ditched it anyway because of the "Russian connections".

Now using paid-for Macrium which has very few of those demerits.

Just use windows defender . A Win NT operating system will always have exploits and loopholes that can get past paid Norton/Mcafee products.

I might be a minority, but I am staying with Kasperspy. Been using it for years since switching from Norton, never had ANY problems at all, never a virus, worm or whatever. Chinese, US, Russia, FFS they all try to steal our data so how do we choose?? I stay with the one that is working...
