Watched this OCD guy who has the same mindset as me describe IN DEPTH why I will never trust MS win 10.
both informative and shows how Big Brother will be watching you..
Maybe you are OK with this ?
I for one am not.

I know this subject has been discussed before ...but what I didn't know is the extent of their invasive practices..even down to key logging ..
So are your bank details realy safe ??
..when Bill and the MS comunity... knows what you typed ?
..you turn it off ...and MS turns it back on with the next update ..which you CANNOT avoid...

Good call. And you're not alone in understanding the facts, but sadly most just don't care, don't know ...and don't want to know. Am staying on 8.1 (tilefree\appfree\spywarefree version) on all my pc's, works great and will last until 2023, then I'll have a look at what's available :O)

For those fallen prey to Murkysoft's latest offering, some tools:

Lots of 'good guys' posting on notebookreview.com forum, good source of real (w10)life info :O)

I did consider 8.1 myself as my main OS ...but TBH I am a bit set in my ways ..and like the look and feel of Win7 ...having been weened on Win95/98 ...and eventually moving to XP ...which even after being abandoned a couple of years back ..STILL has a 20% user maket share..
Win7 IS the natural replacement for XP ...but has only about 2 years of support left sadly.
8.1 has many good reviews ..and certainly has established a following ..but lacks the look and feel of XP or 7 ...so doesn't neccessarily appeal to older users like myself ..
..and having F****d up majorly with the original Win8 finger swiping version ...it put Soooo many users off .
For once MS saw the error of their ways ..and relented with 8.1 ..bringing back some key features.
Will they ever really learn ..?
I guess it will take a huge catastrophe on the scale of the recent ransomeware incident to make folk aware that their personal data is 'out there' and open to exploitation..

8.1 with all the (cr)apps, store, tile, metro etc removed, add classic shell, = enhanced and improved 7 (imo).
Left 7 behind with no regrets, and everything working great for many years, security updates 'til 2023.
Pic, my current desktop.

Sounds like this is the direction I'll be taking in 2020...but will only buy me another 3 years grace..
Curious tho ..
you say sh!tty Metro removed ..but is the control panel shared with metro as in win 10 ?

Do yourself a test install of win8 with the classic shell add on - it makes it look pretty much like win7. I was given a laptop with win 8 on it & what a dogs dinner of an OS.. Classic Shell made it usable again. Until the motherboard failed on it anyway

All my widows pc's have 10 on them, classic shell is a must! Otherwise I can't find anything.

I hate the (cr) apps, tiles etc.

I use the windows 7 look, with the "normal" start button.

^^^ give o&0 shutup a test ? It stops most (nearly all) of the privacy flow toward Murkysoft.
O&O ShutUp10: download free antispy tool for Windows 10

Have tested it a lot, seeing the number of windows generated ip connections (towards god knows where) going from dozens continuously to just a few now and then.

^^^ That cures windows spying on you, now you only have your ISP to deal with :D.

Of course, using pc or phone, being incognito is quite impossible.

(imo) difference between an isp and MS\Google\Apple:

The isp stores just a history of ip connections and is interested in making money out of the -connection-

The others are actively scanning and extracting info from devices, emails, keyboard typing etc etc, analyzing and storing usage patterns and personal (anonymized? lol) details, amassing all this for some further, current, future exploitation, interested in making money out of the -person-

W10 has emerged as one of the worst, and (again, imo) whatever one does or can do to keep some pieces of privacy is good :O)

Windows 7/8 also spy on you with the latest updates, best just using a VPN then no one can see what your doing,

Its getting ridiculous, next people will want to look at your house wife car living room toilet garden and what's going on in the bedroom .

Use, or otherwise, of VPN's cuts both ways, though: Service Providers tend to want a degree of reassurance over the credential of their users.

That said, IP addresses can be spoofed anyway, so the game gets ever more complex.

Even on a humble Forum such as this, we get all sorts of interlopers and hope to intercept them early on. Not always successfully, but generally so.

You may remember that I asked a lot of questions about W10 before I installed it on anything, and so I put ShutUp10 on each m/c immediately after W10 - and it seems to work, but you need to check it after every W10 update

As someone who used Linux distros exclusively for several years owing to my dislike of all things Microsoft, I've softened my antipathy because Win 10 is so easy and intuitive - and fast - and stable - that I can accept having to put a bit of effort into kiboshing the spying.

I have it on 5 pc's and have my "movies" & "music" folders mounted to another hard drive in the pc. It just makes it easier for me to move stuff around my network if all the pc's are talking the same language.

I have the x86 & x64 flavours of home and can honestly say I won't go back to any other versions.

OTOH, when W10 goes tits up then it really does - had to rebuild 3 m/c's when that happened. The "main" m/c is still on W7 Pro (but has been upgraded to W10 Pro and then downgraded again to W7 Pro - so I "should " be able to upgrade again when/if I m "totally happy" with W10 on the others.)

Never had a single issue with it, even using this cheapo (£120) 10" Linx Tablet.

But there's always a first time!

I know the best way is a clean installation each time, but you are "supposed" to be able to roll back to an earlier installation of say win 7 pro...
