I notice that several members seem to have residences abroad.... I was just reading the small print on my travel insurance and noticed it says it is valid for stays of 2 nights and over in commercial premises; specifically excluding stays in your own or friends property. So, what cover do you have in case you, for instance, have medical problem

I changed my current account to Nationwide's FlexPlus about a year ago. For a fee of £10 a month I get world wide travel insurance for the family, European breakdown cover and interest paid at 3% gross on the current account up to a maximum of £2500. There are other benefits which I am unlikely or unable to take advantage of such as mobile phone insurance, new white goods warranty extension and some other stuff I'm not sure of.

It's difficult to pick the individual cost out of that but the breakdown insurance with the RAC prior to that was over a £100 by itself prior to that (albeit covering both myself and my wife - the Nationwide one just covers me) and my travel insurance was included for European countries as part of my previous current account.

We also have EHIC cards for emergency treatment cover/recovery of (some) fees.

TBH I haven't checked to see if staying in our own property is excluded but I don't recollect seeing that exclusion when I was agonising over whether or not to change. I will check it out though.

EDIT

This is the account information. I had forgotten about the commission free cash withdrawals
which is sometimes not inconsiderable and could easily cover a month's complete fee. Still checking on the insurance details.

It's in the Nationwide Summary document that I spotted it. I can't remember seeing it previously but they sent me a copy on the anniversary. We also have the EHIC card

Damn!
UK trips must also be in a commercially run premises that doesn’t belong to a friend or family member
But then, once we're chez nous we would use the EHIC card anyway.

It never even occurred to me that some policies might not cover holidays at your own or friends property overseas. Having looked at my policy which comes with my bank account I can't see any mention of this but I have found out that I'm not covered for damage from sonic booms?!

Which all goes to prove my life long point that insurance is a big waste of money for the millions that never read the small print. 30 years ago I stupidly put a cup of tea on the Bush TV whilst plugging it in and my then two year old ran at the TV when a picture came on knocking over the tea into the back of the TV and poof crack smoking, TV no more. The insurance company made me take it to a repairer and I explained what had happened, his report said water damage not tea damage so they would not pay out on the home insurance, I have hated insurance ever since, too many loopholes for them to wriggle into or out of. Oddly enough I knew someone about the same time who regular as clockwork used to get a new bathroom suite on the insurance and yet they never batted an eyelid, that lump hammer of his made a few journeys to the bathrom.

Actually, reading it again; it looks as if that paid accommodation clause only applies to trips within the UK, so maybe I'm seeing problems that aren't there.
