Intelsat says it is recognising a US ruling in favour of formal sanctions against Iran, and in particular against the president of Iran’s national broadcasting corporation (IRI:cool:. The decision also means that Press TV, an English-language news channel broadcast from Tehran, is also curtailed.
Intelsat says that it has been ordered by the US government to avoid extending IRIB’s contracts, noting that it will stop providing services as of 1 July. Intelsat is following Eutelsat, SES and most other satellite operators in taking the channels down.
Press TV has been proscribed by most European governments and its transmissions have been taken off the air in several Western countries, including Britain, France, Germany and Spain.

How contrary for supposedly Democratic Countries/Organisations to deny us the opportunity to listen to the points of view of other Countries & Cultures.

What a strange kind of freedom.

But isn't that the reason why they are being denied transmission platforms, because they have been blocking the signals of others?

Don't think there's any question they were blocking channels, I had several Persian customers who had to go to a different satellite for BBC Persia and VOA Persia, as Iran were interfering with the signal from Hotbird.

Next you know they'll be confiscating Persian rugs...
And rightly so. ;)

Once again our Western Powers preach openness and free access to the unwashed, but are eager to limit such access whenever we see fit.
In the words of the Neville Brothers: "It's freedom of speech, as long as you don't say too much..."

I like to think they say "you can have freedom of speech and say what you like, as long as we agree with it", because thats what it feels like some times

Sorry guys, you are conveniently ignoring the fact that Iran were illegally blocking satellite signals from channels they didn't want anyone to see/hear (and not just in their own country), this is simply a sanction as a result of that.

I'm not ignoring the fact, I just didn't comment on it,

They shouldn't have been blocking signals and it does appear they are being sanctioned for that

I was just giving my interpretation of free speech lol

Friends, this Topic has run its course as evidenced by the perhaps inevitable drift towards Political comment.

I removed a couple of such Posts yesterday and again this morning, including one from a non-Staff Member attempting Moderation: The Staff will get around to dealing with issues as appropriate and third-party interventions are not necessarily useful.
