Though many people already “watch TV” on their iPads, they can only do so if the show they're watching is available online. Now, Elgato has just announced the creation of their Eye TV Mobile Tuner. Set to be released by the end of September and retailing for £99.95, it is the first Freeview tuner that connects to the iPad's standard dock connector.

With the Eye TV Mobile Tuner, iPad users can receive television signal from a tiny rod aerial. The app, which will be available for free, can use the iPad's internal storage so that users can pause, rewind, and record live TV.

Unfortunately, the app only supports MPEG-2 SD video, which means it can pick up any MPEG-2 stream sent out over DVB-T, but other channels will not be available. Perhaps there will be a future app that can support HD channels, but for now, so long as the channel is MPEG-2, users can enjoy real TV on the go without having to look for an Internet connection.

The main perks to this tuner is that it has it's own battery, which means it won't drain that of your iPad's. Since it's Freeview, you'll never have to touch your data plan, something many people are sure to appreciate, and there is a strong likelihood that the app will let you move clips to your other iOS devices.

All in all, definitely a worthwhile gadget for the TV junky!
