My Satellite Setup
Fr. Penta 68 with monoblock for 13.0 and 19.2.

BiS TV sub. via Hotbird and TNTsat box on Astra 1.

Zone 2 in the garage which comes out occasionally for experiments, free time permitting!

Now also fiddling with DTT for no real reason at all.

Hi All,

I want to get Astra 1, Astra 2 and Hotbird on my Penta 68. I've got an inverto multi-lnb bracket from Amazon and have populated it with 2 Black Ultras so far. The dish is focussed on 19.2 and I'm pulling in just over 400 FTA TV (unencrypted) channels from that Sat which I'm reasonably happy with. The other LNB is also pulling in about 400 from Astra2. I've a third Ultra on the way which I'm planning to use for Hotbird.

I just wanted to check if I'm putting the LNBs in the correct order & position for optimum performance?

(I'm switching between LNBs with a Konig Diseqc 1.0 Switch which seems to be working well)

Cheers.

My Satellite Setup
OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

Custom built PC

For a dual satellite setup the two LNB's need to be on each side of center, if both satellites are 10 degrees apart then the two LNB's will be 5 degrees off of center.

Now for a three bird setup the the center satellite will be on the center LNB, however you may run into signal problems on the outside LNB's if the beamwidth of the dish is not wide enough. (it's receive beamwidth)

Some dishes can only receive a signal from 15 to 20 degrees, this would be 7.5 to 10 degrees on each side of center, some even less.

This is why they have what is called an elliptical dish, it can receive on a wider beamwidth then a standard single or dual dish, some can even do 5 to 6 satellites on 5 to 6 LNB's.

So this said I assume your looking for Hotbird at 13 East and Astra 2 at 28 East, with Astra 1 in the middle at 19 East, this would give a spread of about 15 degrees, so a dish would need to have about a 20 degree beamwidth for good signals on all 3 LNB's.

Yeah that looks ok. you may want to bend the adapter in a little bit either side of the centre lnb just to get the outer lnb's pointing a bit more towards the middle of the dish.

If you get a narrow lnb you can probably get 23.5E in there as well - or some of the stronger stuff off 9E or 5E or maybe even 5W. Dont worry if the outer lnbs are tight against the 13E lnb if you try this just zip tie them in place and pack them with a piece of folded cardboard to get the right angle towards the dish. It'll be fine - there is no shortage of signal from these birds in Europe.

Once you are happy with the lnb placements make sure you do the screws up tight otherwise they will move in time - been there got the tshirt :D

As an absolute multi LNB nutter I would say that you have went the right way obviously with the focus sat, the 28E looks a bit high buddy, but not by much. The Hotbird LNB will be a lot closer, especially on the smaller Penta you have.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. I was hoping that the Penta 68 would be up to the task - I know that's it's a good dish for single lnb (or motorised) setups but I was wondering if it's unique shape would be a problem for multi-lnb setups. Results seem OK so far, but I have nothing to compare it with.

There shape is no good for multi LNB setups mate but for what your wanting it should be fine.

Thats all thats important in this game. Keep on experimenting and see how far you can push your kit. If you have room stick an 80cm dish round towards 52/53E - theres plenty of interesting stuff on the 3 orbital slots there.

Cheers guys - This is destined to be a non-experimental setup, giving me french (via a BIS sub on hotbird), german and english channels, so I was hoping it would be solid enough for all three (even in crap weather). Sounds like the consensus is that I should be good to go, so I'll crack on when the 3rd inverto arrives.

In terms of the number of channels I'm getting, does 400 per sat sound about right? Bearing in mind that I've done Full Scans for FTA only, TV and not radio channels?

Still thinking about what a more experimental rig might look like and where to mount it........... :)

My only worry is that fat ass Penta LNB holder, its thick as hell the end pic of the three I uploaded is 19E focus with 13E offset on a Zone 2 $ly dish modded by me, there touching almost, your in England I take it so you will have more space to play with.

Installed the 3rd LNB for Hotbird, and it seems to be working well so far. Did a full scan and pulled in 1400FTA TV (not radio) channels. I've got a couple of weak TPs on Astra1 which might cause me a problem but should be fixable with some minor adjustment.

You shouldn't have any real issues with 19E, especially seeing you have it focus. Check your skew and also how close you have the LNB pushed back/forward
