I once happened upon a bag of peanuts and it said on the side, "warning may contain nuts", it made me giggle at first until I realised it was real H+S pap and not a joke lol

Do not understand your comment CH is it because you or someone in your household is/are peanut intollerant, well I feel sorry for the person but do know the problem first hand. This is labelling issue that is so basic and so well just common sense that I find it unbelievable that it was found necessary to label a bag of monkey nuts to say that it that it may contain traces of nuts. My son has a Brazil nut intolerance but certainly would laugh in the face of that tripe even though he runs the risk of an anaphylactic shock when eating a simple bun or cake. The packet says it is nuts what more does it need?

Actually the opposite. A bag of peanuts, much like a packet of Hob-Nobs, once opened is demolished in one session.

Yes they're legumes - i.e. a member of the pea family.

Which brings up something that has often troubled me. How can people have an intolerance to many foodstuffs that are known as "nuts" when they're not nuts. Many are kernels although this might be construed as splitting hairs it's an important botanical difference.

And then back to the peanut. As it's a legume why does there not seem to be an intolerance to the common or garden pea? I've never heard of a food intolerance to peas. Has anyone?

BTW, I'm not saying that it's all in the mind. But I am saying that there's more to it than first appears.
 
My posterior has difficulty with Peas. Flatulence plus undigested cellulose.
