Hello everybody,

Hope everyone is ok & thank god I have found a forum like this!

Right, down to business & hopefully someone can help me.

I am currently looking to get all the channels I can useing a freesat box I bought in the UK to Corfu (Acharavi). At the moment I only have a 90cm dish which I know will not do but trying to find a satellite dish shop online in greece or even anywhere in the world is very hard, the only size most shops do is up to 1m, could anyone else help with this?

I am hopefully looking to buy a 2.4 / 3m dish if I can find one & I hope I can get all the channels I can, I have had a quote of someone here in Corfu town for 1700euro for the dish, sky everything fitted, is that cheap?

Welcome to the forum CorfuDaniel

Well it is an unusual size to buy for most of us in the UK, if you read the forums especially the sky fringe reception threads you should pick up lots of pointers regarding dish size etc and possibly costs. I have to say 1700 euros does not seem to be over the top for such a big dish fitted just make sure it is constructed of one piece and not a cheap petal version that bolts together, they are notoriously poor.
 
1700€ sounds well over the top for a 2.4m dish system. Here a complete system installed (with a Famaval 2.4m extendible prime focus dish and receiver) costs around 1200€, but you already have the receiver (which should be a Foxsat HD).
 
I thought it was a little much, yeah, it seems to be that the cheap 2.4m dishes are in like 6 deperate parts that would bolt together & I take it they are of poor quality since I can find them for around 200 UK pounds?

I have looked all over the internet for a merchant in greece that sells big dishes, yet, nearly every single pub/club has one?! How does this happen, i suppose the most smartest thing to do would be to ask?

What would you say is a reasonable price for maybe a 2.4m to a 3m dish?

Yeah I am just using a freesat box at the moment with a 90cm dish and have just got hotbird with 1300channels but half of them are either scrambled, arab channels or pay4porn channels.

Is there a way to stop recieving the scrambled channels at all and for the reciever to just recieve the channels I can actually watch?

Huevos sorry but I took it because the o/p said sky, he wanted sky, or should I polish my crystal ball some more :)

No fighting taking place, well not here at least but I read you wanted sky so that is why I thought it was a reasonable price, but hey what do I care
 
Yeah I know.

That's becuase that's all the guy would do, he would not fit the freesat for me, only sky + paid subscription + card + 3m dish = 1700euro, with this being said I went to a guy in Acharavi today and he told me just for the sky box paid and activated would cost 700euro so I don't know if this price is good or bad..
 
Also, does anybody know how to stop freesat from picking up the scrambled channels? There very very annoying, mostly arab and mature content channels.
 
Which satellite are you pointed at, doesn't sound like Astra 28.2?

A Freesat dedicated receiver will not include encrypted channels in its EPG.

Daniel you say you have a Freesat box, what do you mean? Can you post the make and model?

The price I posted is for a working system that will receive Sky. The box will be something like a Manhattan Plaza XT-M which works fine with the current Sky card and has AU. If someone wanted a "real" Sky box such as the Thomson DSI4214R that would be about 100 Euros extra due to the need for a non-subscribed box.
 
First of all I cannot recommend you a certain sat shop in Corfu. But you can find quite a lot of ads and addresses of shops all around GR in the 2 sat magazines "Digital Satellite TV" and "Doryforika Nea".

You can also ask the following shops from all over Greece if they have a partner for installations in Corfu and if not for their offers:

Your 90cm by the way should receive a lot of frequencies from Astra 2A/B and Eurobird 1 since 1.20m is more than sufficient for all except of those from Astra 2D that really need a big dish.

Right, you say I should be able to get some frequencies from Astra but for some reason I cannot get anything? I am using a 0.2 or 2.0db LNB and using just a standard I think freesat box?

The only satellites I can pick up are things like HOTBIRD and ASIASAT and KU_INTELSET I think they are called, very annoying.

From Corfu, can anyone tell me the direction I should be pointing the dish & an estimate angle? Someone told me we should be pointing as high as possible South South East?
 
Since you're receiving the Hotbirds (13E) the LNB is ok. It's noise figure of 0.2dB ain't important. Even if you're tuning into encrypted channels, you should see the signal quality (not strength) bar rising. The cheapest satellite receiver should have one.

For aligning your dish please have a look at this:

It has also English menus and you can zoom in more to see which house/hill you should aim to for finding the azimuthal direction. 167° means 13° East of your Geographical South (180°) which is indeed SSE. Turning the dish slowly to there you should have the right elevation on your dish. Usually there is a scale on the back side. Since you've received 13E, the elevation must be ok since 28.2E is just a bit lower in Acharavi (both roughly 43°). Before you do this your receiver should be tuned into one frequency that is easy to get there. I'd recommend the 2A or 2B South ones listed here: _http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html and preferrably one with non encrypted stations (the yellow backgrounded ones). Take care that there isn't anything between your dish and 28.2E. I'd recommend also this tool here: _http://www.dishpointer.com/ that can help you for calculating minimum distances to obstacles that could disturb the line of sight.

When you've found the position try also all the other frequencies except of the hard to catch 2D ones.

P.S.: The Asiasats cannot be received from Corfu since they are a little below the Eastern Horizon (from Rodos they are). Intelsats there are quite some. This misleads since preprogrammed satellites in your receiver just gather frequency data which can be multiplely be used from several positions. E.g. 11758H 27500 3/4 might be transmitted from different positions. Using lyngsat or flysat you can always find out which position you're just receiving.

And something you really should clear up if finally you'll be going to a very large dish for Astra 2D:
I am not sure if you'll be able to receive any of the Verticals (e.g. 10847V BBC HD) even with a high quality 3m dish. I had heard something around 3.7m for Corfu but what you should get are the Horizontals which can be gotten all over NW Greece. And another thing that can be important as well is that in other places of the island the reception can be better or worse so always mention that Acharavi will be the place you're planning to install the dish not that in Kavos (because of many pubs most shops could have experience only from there) for example everything is fine and in Acharavi not. Sounds unlikely but in the past there where such cases when the 19.2E satellites were very weak.

Just returned from my place in Corfu and picked up this thread, I'm no expert and I've just muddled through and managed to get the channels that are available on Astra 2 at 28.2' and Eurobird at 28.5'. on an 85 cm dish.

If you take a look at my 85 cm dish on 'Pictures of Members' Setups' forum, (it's about half way down page 2) when I swing the dish round to the steel rod on the left as you look at it, it is lined up on Hotbird at 13', the white umbrella pole in the middle is 19' for Astra 1 and the piece of wood on the right will get Astra 2 (which is what you want) when you swing the LNB arm round and line it up to it. So if you've got Hotbird OK you should be able to swing it round to the left(standing behind the dish) about 10 to 12 inches and you'll be in the right area. You'll need to select the Astra 2 satellites on your receiver (don't know anything about freesat boxes) and then do a scan when you get a signal, it's the only very strong signal around there.

The main channels I get on my free to air box are BBC News, Sky News, Channel 4(TTon4) and the Red Button Streams which are great for sports, match of the day is quite often on there plus world snooker, wimbledon etc. plus quite a few old movie channels.

I also have an old sky box with an expired card which gets ITV, C5, fiver and 5US but the card for that will now need replacing.

I'm back out to Corfu early September, if you haven't sorted it by then I'll happily come and have a look, I'm near Aqualand but we quite often get 'Up North'.

Hope the above helps although having re-read it, it will probably confuse you even more.

Jimmy, I'll be moving to my house Poulades in early March. I'm in the middle of setting up a DM800, here in my house in Qatar and having a lot of fun getting Vista to talk to the DB and one or two other issues.
As you can gather, the Dreambox is coming with me to Corfu.
Would I be able to pick your brains, when I get out there?

You can pick away but you'll find nothing about DB, by the time I arrive for the Summer in early May you'll probably have got your dish issues sorted but if not I'll happily come over and have a look.

Hi Jimmy, yes, I'm well hoping I've got it all up and running by the Summer.
I've just managed to get the DB to connect to the Internet via a Cross-Patch cable AND I've managed to establish comms to my Laptop.
Now comes the tricky part in getting to the DB to actually, do something!!
