As most receivers don't seem to be able to find the video PID for ITV-HD and have to be entered manually, does anyone know how the video PID was discovered initially? Something like TSreader and looking at the NIT tables?

So if a new channel were to be transmitted using a format similar to ITV-HD, how might it be identified as a TV channel and how might the video PIDs be determined?

Llew (or anyone else), would you happen to know what the "Null packets" or "Null PIDS" are for? Do they represent spare capacity on the transponder?

Yes, if you view the pid graph you can see the percentages of all the pids add up to 100%. As the 'working' pids vary according to their use of the bandwidth at any moment in time, the null pid varies accordingly.
