ITV Strikes Again! FA Cup Foul

“Twinned with the horrendous highlights show last night, this farce reminds me of why I hope ITV never gets any football rights ever,” read the tweet of one disgruntled fan complaining about ITV's latest mistake.

The broadcaster aired a live match between Sunderland and Petersborough, and the first eight minutes, mainly the opening stages, of the match went without commentary. Though the sounds of fans could be heard, commentator Peter Drury could not be. When ITV finally sorted out the mess, Drury was forced to open with an apology before he and analyst Jim Beglin could get to work

This is the latest incident in a string of football mistakes ITV has made over the years. Twice in the past, during the World Cup and in 2009's Everton vs Liverpool match, the broadcaster failed to show winning goals because they cut to a commercial break. Earlier this year, they faced the nudity scandal, and just last Saturday aired what many consider was a substandard highlights programme.

Many upset fans took to Twitter over this latest debacle, which definitely will not help ITV's popularity in the long run.

Perhaps they should just stick to creating more episodes of Downton Abbey, which so far has been a smashing success.

It was probably a combination of human error and technology failure. These things happen and it wouldn't constitute a debacle to my mind. They put a banner on the screen apologising for the absence of the commentary.

I stay away from Twitter myself but I gather it's full of people complaining about things.

Does a lack of commentary take anything away from the match itself ?

I know, you dont see bar customers complaining on tw@tter that their local pub is showing the live 3pm saturday match with arabic commentary do you? they just get on and watch the match lol

commentery is only part of the show and true sports fans dont need the commentary anyway as they know whats going on and dont need a commentator to tell them pmsl

What happens when ITV gets involved with football, just ask ITV Digital, oh wait, you can't cos they went under.... :-DOH!

Though, that was caused by them heavily investing in football stuff, and people using unofficial cards to watch for nowt, so tons of money out, no money in, and ITV inadvertently caused the creation of today's Freeview platform... O-Ha

I preferred it without commentary!

I was more annoyed when they said Chasetown were the lowest ranked side to reach the 3rd round! Blyth Spartans 5th Round Replay when we were in the Northern League!
