“Twinned with the horrendous highlights show last night, this farce reminds me of why I hope ITV never gets any football rights ever,” read the tweet of one disgruntled fan complaining about ITV's latest mistake. The broadcaster aired a live match between Sunderland and Petersborough, and the first eight minutes, mainly the opening stages, of the match went without commentary. Though the sounds of fans could be heard, commentator Peter Drury could not be. When ITV finally sorted out the mess, Drury was forced to open with an apology before he and analyst Jim Beglin could get to work This is the latest incident in a string of football mistakes ITV has made over the years. Twice in the past, during the World Cup and in 2009's Everton vs Liverpool match, the broadcaster failed to show winning goals because they cut to a commercial break. Earlier this year, they faced the nudity scandal, and just last Saturday aired what many consider was a substandard highlights programme. Many upset fans took to Twitter over this latest debacle, which definitely will not help ITV's popularity in the long run. Perhaps they should just stick to creating more episodes of Downton Abbey, which so far has been a smashing success.
