I fully understand your scepticism: Indeed, I tend to share it, judging by the half-hearted effort so far via the Dread Button.

But isn't bunging it on the EPG a sign that it might actually become vaguely useful?

IMHO that is just as good a way to develop HD television as launching a dedicated HD channel with it's own programme schedule.

It hasnt been confirmed yet but I'd expecting it to launch onto 10832H 22000 5/6

I doubt there will be much of a test phase - the existing ITV1 HD stream will just be shifted over from 11428H

ITV1 HD to launch in April

ITV has confirmed that its new ITV1 HD channel will launch on Virgin Media, Sky and Freesat next month.

From April 2, Sky and Virgin Media subscribers will be able to watch the new high definition simulcast of ITV1, which will also transfer to a static channel from its current Red Button availability on Freesat.

Viewers on all three platforms will be able watch ITV's World Cup coverage in HD, along with HD dramas such as Father & Son, Identity and The Prisoner. The channel is already available on Freeview HD.

ITV director of television, channels and online Peter Fincham said: "The availability of high definition content is something viewers have come to expect as standard and, as we approach the 2010 World Cup, I'm delighted that we are able to launch our new channel, ITV1 HD, on all major platforms.

"All of our output will benefit from the stunning picture quality that high definition offers, whether it's ITV's original drama, landmark factual shows, entertainment events or our live football."

ITV1 HD will be made available at no extra cost to Virgin Media subscribers on the XL TV package, while some of ITV1's HD content will also launch on Virgin Media's on-demand platform.

"ITV offers some of the UK's most loved programmes and we're delighted to add them to our growing HD channel lineup," said Virgin Media executive director of digital entertainment Cindy Rose.

"This year's World Cup promises some unforgettable games and Virgin Media TV viewers will be able to enjoy every nail-biting, heart-stopping, breath-taking moment in stunning high definition."

Channel "10000" has shown up on 10.832 H. No video or sound testing yet, but this is probably ITV 1 HD. It's not flagged as HD on my Humax HDCI-2000 yet, but it may well be soon...

Sound is available. How you resolve it depends on your receiver. Most scan results give a zero APID. Change to 2363 and AC3 audio if you can use a channel editor for your box.

Theres summat very odd about 10000/10001. I cant get them to consistently lock and give a picture on my fta HD box. Sometimes flicking backwards and forwards onto another channel allows the picture to lock but not always....

ITV1 HD has actually been added to 119 today.
